For one, joining the cross country team was a natural. For the other, it tood plenty of coercion. But despite their separate paths, the destination turned out to be the same: the state cross country meet.

Central Kitsap's freshmen twins Shane and Shannon Moskowitz made the most of their first year running cross country, qualifying for state Saturday at the Class 4A West Central District meet at American Lakes Golf Course.

Shane, who was a distance runner on the junior high track team, took ninth, the top freshman finish for a boy in the Class 4A race. He ran the 3.1-mile course in 16 minutes, 0.7 seconds.

\"Yeah, I'm very surprised,\" he said about his season.

His sister Shannon, who had previously run sprints on the track team, was planning to play volleyball. But after running with the team in a summer conditioning program, he was finally convinced that running long distances is fun.

\"I remember after my first race, I was like 'Coach, I have to quit,'\" Shannon said. \"'I can't do this.'\"

But as the season progressed, she has dropped several minutes off her time. On Saturday, she ran a season-best 19:41.8, which was good enough for 22nd (top six teams and 30 individuals qualified for state).

\"I've been doing so good,\" Shannon said. \"I don't know how I'm doing it.\"

Their coach, John Emery, has an idea.

\"More than anything else, I think (it's) spirit,\" he said. \"They're really competitive.\"

The Moskowitz twins aren't the only young runners that impressed at the district meet.

North Kitsap freshman Ruby Roberts took seventh, an impressive feat considering the West Central is the most competitive girls district in the state, with four of the top 10 teams in the state.

The shy Roberts was hoping to go to state with her whole team, but the Vikings, who qualified last season, ended up eighth.

\"I don't really want to go if they don't go,\" said Roberts, who improved on her best time by six seconds (18:43.2).

NK's boys team took the sixth and final spot to state, edging out South Kitsap 187-189. Cody Bradwell led the Vikings with a 10th-place finish.

\"They all ran really well today,\" NK coach Lee Hodin said of the boys team. \"All the work they've been putting in came out today.\"

In the Class 2A race, the Sequim Wolves made a clean sweep.

Stephanie Marcy won the girls race by more than a minute as Sequim, ranked fifth in the state, easily won the girls title.

Marcy won the Class 3A title last year, and she beat Klahowya's Sierra Cook, who won the Class 2A title a year ago.

Kenny Russell won the boys title as Sequim barely squeezed by Foster, 49-50, for the boys title. In second place was disappointed Quinton Decker of Port Townsend, who was also runner-up last year.

Cook just held off Steilacoom freshman Marki Creger-Zier.

\"I knew she would kick at the end,\" Cook said. \"I just had to open enough of a lead.\"

Cook is headed back to state for third time. She finished in the top five in Pasco as a freshman and a sophomore. This year's meet is a deeper field as the reclassification moved some bigger schools into the 2A classification.

And if that wasn't enough, Cook has been dealing with bursitis in her left hip, but it responded well to treatment in the past weeks.

\"I don't feel as good as I have in the past,\" Cook said about heading into state. \"But after that race, I feel pretty good.\"

Cook will have company at state as the Klahowya girls pulled a minor upset and took the second and final berth to state. It's the sixth straight year the Eagles have sent a team (boys and/or girls) to state.

While Cook and sixth-place finisher Griffin Cooper were expected to do well, it was the 3-4-5 runners that made the difference, Klahowya coach Marty Krafcik said. The Eagles are sending a young team with four freshmen qualifying.

\"They all decided to step up,\" Krafcik said. \"It's amazing.\"

The King's West girls won the Class B title, as they were the only squad to field a complete team. Rachael Jarrett was the top finisher at fourth.

The state meet is Satur-day at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco.
