\"I Just Wanted To See How Fast I Could Go\"

Ruby Roberts

I Just wanted to see how fast I could go.

She’s a Sophomore

She’s in her first year at a new High School

She almost played Soccer!

I asked Ruby Roberts Sophomore at Kingston Senior High about her race plan entering into the Bellevue Invitational at Lake Sammamish last Saturday.

I was wandering if she had done her homework and was worried about the challenge of competing with Bridget Berg of Ballard.

She quickly , as a matter of fact tod me, " I just wanted to see how fast I could go."

Well we all saw that.

Ruby took out an early and fast lead finishing the 3.1 mile course in 17:55.31 22 seconds ahead of Bridget at 18:33.15

Inspite of a determined effort from a seasoned athlete Bridget was not able to close the gap.

Ruby Roberts has a special opportunity to compete on the level of athletes 1 or 2 years older than her and be able to hold her own.

She posted a 5:09 mile last year and placed 13th at the State XC meet with an impressive freshman time of 19:24

She is among the freshman elite ranks to travel to Borderclash

Ruby seemed to get a glimpse of where she stood, and ran. She dedicated the summer to 3 running camps and set her mind to refining her will and intent.

The effort has paid off. In the second big meet of this season she has dropped her times so far below her State mark that it seems to be of another runner.

Last week she took 3rd at the Salt Creek Invite, posting a 17:45 on the 3.1 mile course.

This time her goal was to hang with the top runners. The finish was close and hang she did.

Ruby has shown us that she can successfully engage races with focus on herself, the job, other runners, and ‘Just trying to go as fast as she can"
