National Weekend Rundown: 11 Things You Need To Know

1. Drew Hunter Runs 7:59.33, Smashes High School 3K Record

In one of the best high school performances ever, Hunter finished 5th and broke eight minutes for 3000 meters at the Camel City Elite Meet in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.  He broke future teammate Ed Cheserek's previous national record of 8:05 by five full seconds.

The time is also faster than German Fernandez's 7:59.83 outdoor 3K record. The MileSplit calculator converts it to 8:37.53 for two miles, which would be the fastest high school indoor two mile of all time and the fifth fastest outdoor two mile ever, behind only Lukas Verzbicas, Jeff Nelson, and Fernandez.

Now an all-time great at 3K/two miles, Hunter will chase an even more iconic mark--the sub-4:00 mile--next week. He's racing the mile at the Armory Track Invitational.

Even though Cheserek lost a record, he's gained a teammate. The two will be on the same squad at Oregon next fall.
