Former Virginia Prep Drew Hunter Wins 3K In Ireland


Former Loudoun Valley (Va.) High graduate Drew Hunter was one of three Americans to set meet records on Friday in an international track meet at Donegal, Ireland, winning the men's 3K in 8:14.95, per the Donegal Democrat.

Kaela Edwards, a graduate of Littleton (CO) High and Oklahoma State University, set a meet record in the 800m in a time of 2:03.38, while Robert Domanic, formerly of Lewisville Hebron (Tx.) High and Ole Miss University, posted a sub-4 effort in the mile with a time of 3:59.98. 

Mel Lawrence, who graduated from Concord (Ct.) High in 2009, set a meet record in the women's 3K steeple in 9:36.65.

A little over a year ago, Hunter became the first high school male distance runner to turn professional, signing with adidas and forgoing a scholarship at the University of Oregon.

In February, Hunter featured in the 3K at the Armory Track Invitational indoors, taking third in 7:51.90 and then followed in the 1500m at the Millrose Games, posting a time of 3:56.80. He raced in a 5K in May before moving on to the USATF Championships in the 1500m, where he finished 11th in 3:46.37.
