GSL Finale: Panthers Win Titles

In an incredible display of team strength and depth Mead won the both the girls’ and boys’ GSL titles today at Mead HS dispatching Mt. Spokane, Lewis and Clark, and East Valley. The girls outscored Mt. Spokane 103 – 47, LC 99 – 51, and EV 134 – 16. Mt. Spokane girls got wins over LC (85 – 59) and EV (114 – 36) and LC out scored EV (121 – 29.) The Mead boys bested Mt. Spokane 97 – 48, LC 93 – 51, and EV 114 – 31. Mt. Spokane boys also got wins over LC (80 – 65) and EV (85 – 59) and LC boys slipped past EV 78 – 63.

 

Mead’s girls won 11 events five of which were won by the Redmon sisters (or very instrumental in winning.) Jazmine won the 100 in 12.5 nipping Mt. Spo’s Afton McKinley given the same time; won the 200 in 26.1 beating McKinley again; the long jump with a mark of 17-2; and was a member of the 4x100. Jade won the triple jump with a 33-5, and was a member of the 4x100. She also added a second in the high jump placing behind her teammate Paula Stevenson.

 

Other highlights:

 

LC’s Holleigh Bergstrom heaved a 126-9 javelin throw and bested her opponents by eight feet.

 

Mead’s Courtney Hutchinson put 40-6 in the shot.

 

Mead’s Baylee Mires ran her first GSL 1600 of the season in 5:10.2, which qualifies her for the District Meet next week.  

 

Mead’s Tasha Clark vaulted 12-1.

 

Mead’s boys team also picked up eleven wins spread equally on track and field. Sam Wright was a double winner in the shot put (56-7) and the discus (161-2.) Mike Smith also picked up two individual wins with victories in the 110 hurdles (15.2) and the 300 hurdles (40.8.) He also ran on the 4x100 team with 100 meter winner Casey Monahan, 400 winner Wes Bailey, and Evan Maack. Freshman Andrew Gardner won the 3200 in 9:26.7, which is a Mead freshmen record.

 

Mt. Spo’s Allan Schroeder got double wins in the 1600 (4:21.6) and 800 (1:57.9) where we lead the log jam of five runners within 1 second.

 

LC’s Levi Taylor once again showed his versatility by winning the javelin with a throw of 191-7 and the triple jump in 45-4 and placing third in the long jump with 20-2.75 (just behind winner Shane Concepcion 20-10, and Ryan Greenwood 20-5 both from Mead.)

 

Next week the GSL moves into post season and splits into 3A/4A competitions. The District Meet will be held Thursday and Friday at Spokane Falls Community College.
