Action really picked up this week and there were numerous impressive races for both teams and individuals. Allie Ostrander continued her domination in Alaska, while Katie Knight zipped home in the Walters. Dallin Farnsworth continued his smashing of records in Idaho, Jackson Baker won again in Oregon, while Anthony Armstrong & Jacob Smith impressed in Washington. These are but a few of the highlights for the week.
Anchorage Christian School Challenge (Alaska)
Allie Ostrander won the 3K run on Friday with a time of 11:25 in the freshman/sophomore division. Hope Steffensen of Kenai claimed the junior/senior girls’ race with 12:06.00 to nip her team mate Bailey Beeson, who was credited with 12:06.3. In the boys’ action Miles Knotek of Seward ran 10:10 to top defending champion John Klein of Grace Christian, who ran 10:16. Micah Hillbish of Skyview ran 10:17 to annex the boys’ 9-10 division.
Palmer Invitational (Alaska)
With the State meet being held on the Palmer course it behooved contenders to take a look at the course early and Allie Ostrander returned to action the next day to steam-roll the competition by almost 40 seconds. Her time of 17:51 blew away the course record of three-time State champion Leah Francis of 18:45. Megan Edic of Lathrop placed second in 18:34, which was over a thirty second improvement over her 2010 time. Following in third & other top placements were Bailey Beeson of Kenai (18:40), Audrey Michaleson of Colony (18:42) & Lydia Blanchet of West Anchorage (18:43). Jenette Northey of Service, who should be the defending State champion, barely missed the former record with her 6th finish in a time of 18:45. In the team scoring for large schools Kenai topped Kodiak 78 to 97, while Wasilla had 103 & Lathrop 141.
Peter Noon of West Valley was the only runner to break sixteen minutes (15:57) & topped Max Romey of Service by 3 seconds. Kuba Grzeda of West Valley (16:02), David Francis Of Juneau (16:04) & Cole Christiansen of Kodiak (16:14) placed third thru fifth. Mason Minturn of host Palmer was 6th in 16:29. West Valley claimed the team title by a 50 – 70 margin over Kodiak. Service was third with 87 and Palmer a distant 4th with 139.
Kailey Wilson, the defending small-school champion, won her division with a time of 19:25 defeating Colette Ohotnicky by 21 seconds. Grace Christian may not have the first two individuals but they secured a shut out of 15 points in the team race. Cheyenne Applegate led the team with her third place effort of 19:49. Grace beat Bethel (70) & Eilseon (82). Andrey Ionashku of Delta Junction won again – this time by 18 seconds. John Klein of Grace raced for the second straight day & was clocked in 16:36, as he earned second once again. Grace Christian, 24 points, won among the small schools beating ACS (63) & Delta Junction (96).
Tiger/Grizz (Idaho)
This race in Idaho Falls will never be called easy and it was made more challenging by warm weather, but you would never know it after looking at Dallin Farnsworth’s time. He won the race for the second straight year and broke his own course record by running 16:20. He led his Highland team to its third consecutive title at the Grizz and his team mates contributed by having only an eleven second gap between the 2nd & 5th members. Elijah Armstrong of Pocatello earned second with a time of 16:50. Pocatello finished 2nd in the boys’ team race with 108 points. James Withers of Snake River won the Varsity B race with a time of 17:10 to best Oliver Scofield of Jackson, Wyoming, who ran 17:12.
In the girls’ competition Presli Hutchinson of Highland won the laurels in the “A” race with her time of 20:48 Taylor Weatherby of Idaho Falls placed 2nd with 20:49, while Alexis Wilks of Highland ran 20:56 - good for third. Hillcrest was victorious in the “A” team race with a low of 61 points, which was 24 points better than Highland. Century finished sixth in the team scoring with 154 but the score is misleading, as they ran without their top two runners: Hannah McInturff & Megan Nolty. There was a tight contest in the girls’ “B”, which resulted in some of the fastest times of the day for the young ladies. Alice Keller of Salmon ran 19:39 to top all girls. Carly Hanson of Butte County ran 20:37, which was good for second & was followed by Cierra Simmons of Soda Springs (20:42) & Tyler Newman of West Jefferson, who ran 20:44.
Silverwood Coaster Cross (Idaho)
Sanne Holland of Cheney triumphed on the trails before she headed for the roller coasters with a clocking of 18:59. Paige Dilmore of Rocky Mountain (19:05) followed her in 2nd and Louisa Serpe of Timberline earned 3rd with 19:14. Cheney won the girls’ team battle over tiny Timberline 81 to 84 & Rocky Mountain had 87. Justin Ross, who earlier won at Camelsback & Caldwell, scored another victory by running 15:54. Dylan Crevelt of McCall-Donnelly followed in second with 16:04 & Brennen Keen of Timberline placed third with 16:06 to edge Chris Frank of Timberline, who ran 16:06.9. Timberline’s 53 points was good enough to top Rocky Mountain, which had 59.Meridian took 4th ahead of Lakeside (Wa.)
Curran Invitational (Nampa, Idaho)
Jake Meeker of Mountain View won with a time of 15:59 and led his team to victory over Eagle 26 to 47. Mikayla Malaspina of Valivue won the girls’ race with a time of 19:10, as she defeated Jordan Mathes of Mountain View, who ran 19:21. Samantha Mckinnon of Rocky Mountain added a third place effort of 19:27. Eagle topped Mountain View 26 to 39.
Weiser Invitational (Idaho)
Emily Nist added to her 2011 victory collection (Driscoll & Caldwell) with a score on Thursday. Her winning time of 19:31 was almost a half minute in front of the second place runner Margarita Palmer of Weser. Rebecca Lassere placed 4th with 20:17 & Briana Tiffany placed sixth in 21:01. Dan Williams of Bishop Kelly won the boys’ title with a 17:01 clocking. Nic Maszk of Baker in Oregon finished second in 17:33.
Tracy Walters Invitational (Spokane)
Katie Knight stole the show with this race, which featured a strong field. Not only did Katie take the crown but she improved upon the course record set by Kinsey Gomez, who will be running for Oregon State this fall. Katie’s time was a stunning 17:41. Katie Bianchini led her Glacier Peak team in the absence of Amy-Eloise Neale and garnered 2nd in a time of 18:15. Caroline Hardin of Bozeman, Mt. placed 3rd in18:19, while Anastasia Kosykh of Eastlake came in fourth (18:38). Stephanie Rexus of Kamialin followed with a 5th place effort in a time of 18:59. Josie Brown of Coeur d’ Alene came in 6th in 19:00, while Adrienne Demaree secured 7th for Jesuit. Other top ten finishes were secured by Andie Creel of Bozeman, Olivia Artaiz of Jesuit & Megan Davis of Glacier Peak. Unofficial team results, and I only count the top seven not ten runners, show Bozeman winning the team battle over Jesuit 62 to 85, although the addition of Neale would lower the Glacier Peak total significantly so they would have been very near the Bozeman total.
Anthony Armstrong of Kamiakin overwhelmed the boys’ competition with his 15:07 clocking, which was only two seconds off the 2010 record set by Foot Locker finalist Andrew Gardner. North Central’s Keith Williams (15:37) & Kai Wilmot (15:38) claimed 2nd &3rd, while Jake Woodland of Bozeman came in fourth (15:43). Austin Frostad of NC took fifth ahead of David Leavy of Jesuit, who was timed in 15:55. Rounding out the top ten were John Fowler of Bellevue (15:56), Alex Kinsey of Ferris (16:00), Hunter McGuirk of Jesuit (16:01) & Keegan McCormack of Kamiakin (16:07). As far as the team scoring went North Central showed that it can reload after noteworthy losses, as they easily won with a low of 45. Jesuit & Bozeman each had 95 points but the Crusaders sixth man David McCaslin (32 – 16:46) crossed the finish before Bozeman’s Colter May (33 – 16:48). It will be interesting to see how things progress throughout this season in the team aspect of the northwest.
Bellarmine Invitational (Tacoma)
Jordan McPhee ran extremely well last track season and she carried that over this season, which is her first in the sport of XC. Even a wrong turn failed to stop her as she ran 11:47 to easily secure a victory. Lily Engelbrekt of Bishop Blanchet placed second in 12:01 & Elise Tello of Eisenhower took third with 12:13. Tosha Cherry of Gonzaga ran 12:18 for third and was followed by Mayra Chavez of Eisenhower, who ran 12:21. Bellarmine went into the meet ranked number one in the state and they lived up to the billing with Daryl Phill leading the way with a sixth place effort in 12:28. Rachel Dahl of Southridge earned seventh with 12:32 ahead of Rose Christen of Charles Wright, who ran 12:34. Jordan Thurston of Bellarmine placed ninth ahead of Samantha Krahling of Gonzaga, who finished two seconds behind her in 12:37. Cyra Carson of Gonzaga placed eleventh, Rachel Weinand of Bishop Blanchet was twelfth & Hannah Derby of Bellarmine, running in her first cross country race, took thirteenth (12:43).
Eisenhower runners Santos Vargas and Jaziel Rodriguez swept the top two individual places to lead the number one ranked cadets to a 60 – 79 victory over Puyallup, while host Bellarmine took third with 82. Skyline was not far behind in fourth with 94. Travis Henley of Wright ran 10:03 to claim third a second in front of Conor McCandless of Gonzaga. Fifth place went to Thomas Grant of Eisenhower, who ran 10:12 and finished a second before Keegan Symmes of Skyline. Wright’s David Goldstone came home seventh, Nathan McLoughlin was eighth, Ruben Riordan took ninth and Mason Fletcher of Puyallup was tenth with 10:29, as he finished four seconds in front of his team mate Mike Ottesen.
Capital Invitational (Olympia)
Two seasons ago Conner Peloquin of Gig Harbor joined his friend & rival Shane Moskowitz at the Foot Locker West Regional and they both qualified for the prep World Series of distance running, so there was more than a bit of anticipation when his sibling twins ran their first high school race. Both ran in their freshman divisions and the results were quite impressive. Tristan took second among the guys with a time of 12:35, which was nine seconds behind Aaron Roe of Jackson. Brenna not only won the girls’ freshman race, but she did it in 14:31 (2.3 miles), which was the best time of the day for all girls’ divisions. Brooke Kingma of Jackson placed second in that division with 14:41. Rachel Atwood scored in the senior division with the second-best time of the day of 14:33 and defeated Kelly Egge of Peninsula by 22 seconds. Nicole Goecke of Prairie scored in the sophomore division with a time of 14:36 to top Sofia Kane of Olympia, who ran 14:41. Lindsay Tompkins of Prairie won the junior edition with a time of 15:20.
Korey Krotzer of Auburn Riverside is one of the top returnees from a strong 2010 campaign and he displayed that he will continue to be a real force by running 11:58. He won the senior race with the best time of the day, yet Curtis King of Peninsula was impressive as well with his time of 12:04. Alec Temple of Capital ran 12:16 to take third in the senior division. W F West runners led the way in the junior race as Dallas Snider (12:40) & Danny Robertson (12:41) took the top two places. Cody Williams of Shelton was successful against the sophomores & won by two seconds over Logan Carroll of Gig Harbor, who ran 12:35.43. Wolfgang Beck, who lost most of his freshman campaign last year due to illness, returned strongly to take third in 12:35.86.
Sehome Invitational (Bellingham)
The recent vintage Sehome Invitational is yet another meet run in class divisions on a short (2 mile) course, which are developed to ease runners into the final distance of 5K. Marina Roberts, a senior from Kingston, easily chipped in the best time of the day with her 11:40 clocking. Interlake’s Summer Hanson placed second in the division with 12:09. Brittany Gappa of Squalicum & Sally Larson of Cedar Park waged the best duel of the day & they were barely separated at the end, where Gappa was credited with victory in a time of 12:05.44 to 12:05.73. In the sophomore race Niki Waghnai of Interlake came in first (12:37) to defeat Marissa Hiekema of Lynden Christian (12:54). Emily Pitts, a Sehome freshman, made her debut a winning one with a triumph in the freshman race. Her time of 12:13 gave her a 16 second margin over Antoinette Tansey of Interlake.
Somewhat surprising the top times of the day for the guys came disproportionally from the junior race, where Patrick Gibson of Squalicum ran 10:16. Conner Johnson of Sehome followed a second later and Dillon Quintana of Mount Baker took third with 10:22. Blaine’s Tom Bradley ran 10:22 for fourth & Connor Jungkuntz of Fernadale came in fifth with 10:23. Terry McClement of Bellingham led the seniors with 10:32 & finished a second ahead of Mitch Beard of Nooksack Valley. Matt Reith of Oak Harbor ran 10:38 for third. Sophomore honors went to Jared Alskog of Arlington, who ran 10:51, and bested Jerry Behrens of Kamiak by four seconds. Oak Harbor had the top freshman in John Rodeheffer, who finished with a time of 10:56. Kirby Overman of the host team earned second.
Hudson’s Bay Run-A-Ree (Vancouver, Wa.)
This was the 51st edition of this venerable race and it was most likely one of the hottest days the event has witnessed. That being the case a new record was unlikely yet Mark Tedder of Battle Ground gave it a shot, when he won the race with a time of 15:41. The course record was set last year by Dylan Croeni, who ran 15:41. Roman Kirkov of Union placed second with 16:14 and Kalama’s Cody Shriver earned third with 16:22, which was a half minute improvement over his time as a junior. After last spring’s track season I’ve been anticipating Alexis Fuller’s debut and she did not disappoint. Alexa Efraimson of Camas, who is also a freshman, gave her a real challenge with the race going down to the wire. Union’s Fuller nipped Efraimson at the line with both clocked in 18:44. Chanttalle Blundell of Hockinson ran 19:56 & Abby Knight of Heritage took fourth with 19:57. Priscilla Timmons of Skyview’s record of 18:18 was pretty untouchable, however.
Eastmont Three Team Meet (Wenatchee Wa.)
Jacob Smith, who last year placed high in the US Junior XC meet, got his season underway with a rousing effort by blazing the course in a time of 15:22. Nicholas Boersma, his Wenatchee team mate, placed second in a time of 16:02. Emily Nordt of Wenatchee scored in the girls’ race with her time of 20:28 & Shala Scott of Moses Lake finished second in 21:09.
Kingco 4A Preview (Seattle – Thursday)
Chandler Olson of Woodinville ran 18:44 to top Kyra Burke of Inglemoor and the rest of the field by over forty seconds. Ellie Clawson of Issaquah earned third with 19:32. Ballard’s Alex Browns was the only runner under sixteen and his time of 15:58 was good for a ten second margin over Coughlin of Garfield. Taking third was Skyline’s Keegan Symmes with 16:22.
Brooks Runner’s Soul Hermiston
On sight coverage has already appeared here but a brief note is worth repeating. Jackson Baker of Franklin won the race in impressive time despite the high temperature. The Hermiston boys romped in the team battle with Jose Macias placing second and three other Hermiston runners following him into the finish chute. Katriel O’ Reilly held off a strong late charge by Katie Markwick.

Yreka Elks Invitational (Cal)
Zorg Loustalet of Henley led all runners with his time of 16:18 and John Adams of Mazama followed a second later. Megan James of Shasta in California claimed the girls’ title with her time of 21:05. Carmen Mejia of St. Mary’s . North Medford topped Yreka 56 to 64 in the boys’ team total & Shasta (93) & Crater (103) earned third & fourth. Crater did not run some of its top runners however. In the girls’ team action South Medford topped Ashland 31 to 33 & Yreka was a distant third with 104.
Marist Invitational
Hudson Eustace of Cascade Christian, who placed fifth last fall in the Foot Locker West Junior race, earned victory with a time of 16:47. The girls’ are unclear, as we have seen two different sets of results & have not been able to confirm either. Sierra Brown of Hidden Valley ran 19:26 according to one result sheet, while Sarah Estabrook of Triad (21:30) is credited in another.
Murv Fanning Beach Run (Newport, Or.)
The Fanning run is a fine race held on Agate Beach at low tide, which offers a view of the coast, a pleasant picnic afterwards & of course a beach run, which offers a gentle surface, so it has been a wonder why more teams do not avail themselves to it. St. Mary’s & Milwaukie, however, did take advantage of the race & Paige Rice of St. Mary’s waged a nice duel with Shannon Susbauer. The SMA runner prevailed in a time of 18:30 over Susbauer, who ran 18:42. Sasha Gonzalez of Milwaukie took third, but St. Mary’s Academy won the team race. Theo Puentes of Newport led the way for the boys with 16:23 and David Santillan of Milwaukie (16:37) placed second. Jonathan Santillan finished third with 16:55.
Bill Chapman Invitational (Hillsboro)
We were on sight on Friday for the meet but Claire DeVoe of Lincoln won another race this season but this time under high heat. The Lincoln runner ran 19:44 to top Lily Mayko, who finished second in 20:32. Justin Rocereto of Southridge claimed the guys’ title with a time of 16:26 to best Ryan Byrd of St. Helens by a second.

Canby Invitational (Or)
This Thursday meet was also covered live. Sunset’s Karen Qu earned her first invitational victory to the class title she won earlier at Wilsonville with a winning time of20:17. Charlotte Corliss of Sunset placed second in 20:22 and was followed by Sarah Fahmy, Emma Grosser & Greer Davis, who completed a Sunset sweep. The Tigard girls placed second in the team race with 67 points, while Canby had 79. Nathan Brown won the individual title for Sunset with a 17:13 clocking. Emanuel Kraynick of West Salem placed second in 17:29 & Scott Rice of Tigard earned third.

Tualatin Invitational (Or)
Nich Obletz of Oregon Episcopal ran 10:34 on the two mile course, which was shortened from its usual 5K due to high temperatures. The race went down to the wire between Nick & Mohammed Hussein of Beaverton, who was credited with the same time Dan Oekerman of Beaverton garnered third in 10:47 & Nathan Normo of Lake Oswego took fourth. Kevin Kavanaugh, who placed in the top ten at State as a sophomore, had an off day placing 13th. Alexandria Cross took advantage of her home course advantage to win in a time of 12:48. Emily Weber of South Salem came home four seconds later. Rebecca Anna of Southwest Christian placed third & Vivian Hawkinson of South Salem took fourth. South Salem won the girls’ team title with 39 points to 74 for West Linn & 99 for Sherwood. Lake Oswego annexed the boys’ team title with 60 points but there was little to separate the second through fourth place teams, as West Linn had 81 points, Beaverton 82 & Tualatin 83.

This venerable Ohio race saw Samuel Prakel win with 15:41, while Mike Seas (15:44) & Ryan Polman (15:45) took the next two spots. Tammy Berger & Brittany Atkinson raced across the finish line together with Berger nipping her rival 18:26.0 to 18:26.83.
Kamehameha (Hawaii)
Anna Maxwell, coached by former Centennial runner Rob Collins, of San Lorenzo Valley showed that she is well prepared for a second berth at Foot Locker Nationals by running the best time of the day in all divisions: 17:54.
Randolph Invitational (NY) Mary Cain ran 17:50.
