Five Cougars Win at Willie Williams Track Meet First Day
Four Cougs reach NCAA Regional Qualifying marks in first outdoor meet.

TUCSON, Ariz. - Washington State's track and field team opened the 2006 outdoor season winning five events at the Willie Williams Classic Track & Field Meet at the University of Arizona's Roy P. Drachman Stadium Friday night.
Sophomore Jon Jeffreys (Spokane Valley, Wash.) won the men's javelin with an NCAA Regional Qualifying and personal-best throw of 213-feet, 4 inches (65.03m). Senior Jenna Dean won the women's javelin with an NCAA RQ toss of 160-feet, 8 inches (48.98m).
Catie Schuetzle (freshman, Spokane, Wash.) won the women's long jump with a PR leap of 19-feet, 6 inches (5.94m).
On the track, Cougar sprinter James McSwain (senior, Las Vegas) won the men's 200m dash with an NCAA RQ time of 21.19 seconds. John Cassleman (junior, Pullman) won the men's 400m hurdles with an NCAA RQ time of 51.83 seconds. WSU assistant coach and former All-American Ellannee Richardson, running for the Palouse Hills Track Club, won the women's 400m hurdles in a time of 57.79 seconds.
TUCSON, Ariz. - Washington State track and field seniors James McSwain and Martin Boston claimed wins Saturday at the Willie Williams Classic Track & Field Meet at the University of Arizona's Roy P. Drachman Stadium.
McSwain (Las Vegas), who ran an NCAA Regional Qualifying time in winning the men's 200m dash Friday night, won the 100m dash with a time of 10.16 seconds but a mighty 6.3 meters-per-second wind aided his effort so the time does not qualify for NCAA Regional standards.
Boston (Hayward, Calif.) won the men's triple jump with a wind-aided leap of 49-feet, 3/4 inch (14.95m). Boston and McSwain then joined Justin Woods and Jaycee Robertson for the winning 4x100m relay team and an NCAA RQ time of 39.67 seconds.
Robertson (junior, Spanaway, Wash.) finished second in the 100m dash with a time of 21.38w while Woods was fifth in the same race at 21.82w. Both would have been NCAA RQ times had there not been such a strong gust of wind.
Freshman Matt Lamb (Emmett, Idaho) tossed the discus an NCAA RQ distance of 171-feet even for fifth place in the event. In the men's hammer throw, redshirt freshman Phil MacArthur tossed a personal-best 179-10 (54.83m) for fourth place.
Freshman Sara Trané (Sweden) ran an 800m time of 2:15.80 for second place. Brandi Probasco-Canda (Portland, Ore.) finished third in the 400m dash with a time of 56.77 while freshman Lorraine King (Fontana, Calif.) was fifth with a time of 57.20.
Sarah Burns (sophomore, Tacoma) took second in the women's triple jump with a leap of 38-3 1/4 (11.66m) while freshman Catie Schuetzle (Spokane) placed fifth (37-5 1/4).
Results for other Cougar women at the meet included La Shawnda Porter's 12.16 in the 100m dash (5th), 4x400m relay team of Probasco-Canda, King, Trané, Porter second (3:50.11), McKenzie Burgess Garberg (Benton City, Wash.)'s discus throw of 148-8 (45.32m) was third behind WSU volunteer assistant coach Andrea Thornton's 160-5 (48.90m) with Jessica Zita (Echo, Ore.) seventh with a throw of 118-11 (36.25m).
Cougar men also competing included Justin Chambers (Albany, Ore.) third in the 800m (1:56.54), Jimmy Schofield (Spanaway, Wash.) ninth in the 400m dash (50.09), in the high hurdles Robert Williams (Riverside, Calif.) was sixth (14.91) and Josh Leyk (Spokane Valley) was seventh (14.93), Moreno Zapata (Tacoma) fifth in the triple jump (49-0 3/4w), Drew Ulrich (Spokane) was sixth in the discus (168-9) while Chase Mancuso (Mukilteo, Wash.) finished 12th in the discus (146-5) and fourth in the hammer (156-3).
The Cougar track and field teams travel to the USC Trojan Invitational next weekend at Los Angeles.
