Blue Devils track teams off and running Walla Walla Union Bulletin Mar 22, 2008


WALLA WALLA -- The Wa-Hi boys and girls track and field teams started their season on Thursday afternoon on a chilly Martin Field, hosting Kennewick and Southridge in a non-league meet.

The boys garnered 10 individual and two team first-place finishes, and the girls recorded two individual winners, with half of their team competing at the Pendleton Invite.

WENATCHEE - The Wa-Hi cross country teams got an idea of where they stand headed into the season with a 3-mile race at Walla Walla Pointe here Tuesday.

The seven-school meet included three Columbia Basin League Class 4A schools that the Blue Devils kept score against.

For the boys, Moses Lake took a 25-30 victory, Richland a 17-46 win and Wenatchee a 27-28 decision from the Blue Devils.

``The guys ran hard,'' Wa-Hi coach Mike Locati said. ``We were missing one varsity runner, who was ill, and our No. 2 runner twisted his ankle two-and-a-half miles in. Our outcome probably would have been a little different if both those guys were there.

With two cross country teams in tow, coach Malcolm Dunn gets to showcase experience as well as youthful talent when he hosts the annual Whitman College Invitational this Saturday at Fort Walla Walla Park. The Missionaries are a relatively experienced lot on the men\'s side, where the returning talent includes a handful of seasoned veterans who figure to run at the front of Whitman\'s lead pack. The women\'s storyline promises to run in a different direction, led by a number of speedy first-year athletes.
