Cole Rockhold became the 11th Missouri native to break the four-minute mile barrier on February 11 at the Husky Classic running a time 3:59.55. Rockhold went up against some of the best runners in the nation in a heat that featured Olympians Evan Jager and Lopez Lomong as well as NCAA standouts Joshua Thompson (Oklahoma State), Matthew Maton (Oregon), and Thomas Joyce (California). While it was his first time under the elusive mark, he currently ranks fifth in the nation in the mile after running a 4:03.12 mile at the Colorado Open on February 3. Under NCAA altitude and flat-track conversion guidelines that time converts to 3:57.19, a mark that will almost certainly qualify him for the NCAA Division I Indoor Championships.Even more impressive might be the conditions in which Rockhold was able to become the 485th American to run under four minutes for a mile. Colorado State head coach Art Siemers tweeted out after the race that Cole was battling strep throat.Cole Rockhold joins the sub-4 mile club 3:59.55 with strep #noexcuses pic.twitter.com/MHevz0JN8s— Art Siemers (@coachsiemers) February 12, 2017 Rockhold, a 2014 graduate of Truman High School, was a prep standout running 4:13.68 and 9:07.08.
