Freshman Girls 2019 XC All-MileSplitCA Team


The MileSplit California 2019 All-State Freshman Girls Cross Country team is a subjective list that considers performance at the State Meet within the class, combined 3-mile and 5000-meter times within the class, and top performances regardless of class as the primary criteria. 

Athletes are listed alphabetically with school and section noted.

FIRST TEAM

MacKenzie Browne, Riverside North (SS)


Won the Southern Section Division 2 title with the fastest overall time in the merge (16:53.7). She was the only runner at that meet under 17 minutes on the 3-mile Riverside City Course. That time ranks No. 2 in the class for 3 miles. Her 16:53.70 from Woodbridge ranks as the No. 2 time for 3 miles in the class.

Kelli Gaffney, Great Oak (SS) 

Most consistent of Great Oak's three top freshman girls, placed fifth in the class at the State Meet  (17:56.60) while running as Great Oak's No. 2. Ran as Great Oak's No. 1 at NXN placing 57th overall and sixth among Californians. 

Taylor Jones, Arroyo Grande (CS) 

Placed fourth overall in the Central Section Division I race and third among 2023 girls (18:14.37). Here 18:05.20 ranks 9th in the class from the State Meet. Placed second in the Large School race and fifth in the merge (18:15.40) from the Clovis Invitational.

Allura Markow, Dana Hills (SS)


Third in the class for 3-mile/5K combined ranking and her 17:51.20 for eighth place in the Division II race at State ranks as the No. 3 overall time in the class from that meet. Her 17:25.5 from the Southern Section D-2 Final ranks 14th overall in the merge and second in the class.

Erica Nyberg, Clovis East (CS) 

Ranks second in the class for combined 3-mile/5K times and her time of 17:55.30 ranks fourth overall in the class from the State Meet. She was second to senior Corie Smith in the Central Section D-I race.

Lauren Soobrian, Los Altos (CC) 

Placed fourth in the Division I race at the State Meet with the fastest time in the class regardless of division, 17:42.70. Won CCS D-I title. Also won at Lowell and Monterey Bay and placed second at De La Salle. Her 18:03.90 was tops in the class from the Clovis Invitational merge.

Sydney Sundgren, Buchanan (CS) 

Placed sixth in the Division I race with the No. 2 time in the class at the meet (17:45.70) while helping Buchanan upset Great Oak to win the State title and qualify for NXN. Placed 54th overall and fifth among Californians at NXN. Her 16:49.78 from John Seaman Invite (Nov. 2) ranks as the No. 1 3-mile time in the class.


SECOND TEAM

Liesel Blau, St. Margaret's (SS) -- Ran 18:00.00 for third place in the Division V race at the State Meet. That time ranks No. 6 in the class from State. Placed second in the Southern Section Division 5 race behind three-time champion Mia Barnett. 

Kaiya Brooks, Crystal Springs Upland (CC) -- Won the CCS Division V title beating a two-time champion by more than 47 seconds. Ran 18:11.10 to place fourth in the State Final with the No. 12 time in the class from that meet.

Amber Chase, El Capitan (SD) -- Placed third in the SDS Division I championship. Her 18:09.50 for seventh at the State Final ranks as the No. 12 5K in the class. Her time was the 11th fastest in the class at the State Meet.

Aishling Fabian, Great Oak (SS) -- Scored in six of eight major races for Great Oak, including as the team's No. 1 at Cool Breeze (10th overall and top freshman), No. 3 at Great American (third overall freshman), No. 3 at NXN and No. 4 at Mt. SAC (No. 3 freshman), Woodbridge and State (No. 9 freshman in the D-I race and No. 15 overall in the class). 

Grace Hutchison, Buchanan (CS) -- A key member of Buchanan's Central Section and CIF-State Division I title team. Placed 14th overall in the D-I race at State, covering the 5K Woodward Park course in 18:02.90, which ranks sixth in the class for the D-I race and eighth overall in the class from the CIF Championships.

Hannah Riggins, Del Norte (SD) -- Ranks seventh in the class from the State Meet (18:01.20) and eighth in the class for combined 3M/5K times. Placed third in the San Diego Section Division I race (18:07.50) and the No. 1 girl in the class from that meet. Placed 17th at Foot Locker West as the top California freshman.

Brianne Smith, Quartz Hill (SS) -- Ran 18:07.30 at State to rank 10th in the class. Ranks 13th in the class for combined 3M/5K times. Placed ninth in the Division 1 race at the Southern Section Finals as the no. 2 freshman behind Kelli Gaffney. Her 17:40.6 at the SS Final ranked No. 4 in the class from the merge.
