After one indoor season at the University of Georgia, Arria Minor has decided to take her talents west to Baylor University, a program known for its quarter-miler history. And she'll be eligible right away.
This is a major coup for the Bears, and possibly a restart for Minor, the No. 4 recruit in the Class of 2019, after shying away from the 400m in recent years. Before graduating from Denver East (CO) High School, Minor did not race the distance once over her senior year. And this past indoor season, the 19-year-old focused entirely on the 60m and 200m, along with a few performances in the 4x400.
But Minor's move to Baylor could reimagine that thinking again.
She told MileSplit that her outlook at the program will see her working within all three sprint events. She said coach Michael Ford "does a really good job of combining Coach Hart's style of endurance training with his own style."
It's hard to forget just how successful she was at the distance in 2018, with a PR of 51.92 seconds at the Colorado State Championships. That year she broke 53 seconds four times, including a time of 52.25 seconds at the USATF U20 Championships.
But Minor ultimately has a range of speed beyond the quarter-mile, holding personal best efforts of 11.31 seconds in the 100m and 22.89 in the 200m.
As Baylor rightfully pointed out, she left high school with 12 state championships in Colorado and four state records, along with a host of individual accolades.
And Minor, along with 400m recruit Kavia Francis, could be the prime pieces who begin to fill gaps and help the program build in an area of weakness following the graduation of Kiana Horton in 2019.
Minor will join a sprint group that includes promising freshman Mariah Ayers and upperclassmen Sydney Washington, as well as new recruits and Jamaican sprint talents Ackera Nugent and Kavia Francis.
