Festival of Miles Race Retro: Brandon Miller vs Himself

Just imagine what John Burroughs' (MO) Brandon Miller would have done his senior year in a two lap race. His junior year's season was pretty much at a halt with a hamstring injury that caused him to miss the majority of the year.

During his sophomore year, he broke the 31 year old Missouri state record in the 800m with a 1:49.55 at the 2018 Class 3 State Championship. As a freshman, he was the 800m state champion and gold medalist at the AAU Junior Olympics for that event and the 1500m. The 2020 season could have been the icing on the cake for him when it came to his high school career.

Looking back at his history of competing at the Festival of Miles, spectators and fans could expect an outstanding performance from Miller. He was undefeated in competing at this meet in high school. The last time Miller competed in this event was in 2018 where the race became about him against the clock.

The starting gun went off and Miller started to make up the stagger on the rest of the field within the first 30m of the race. Even from lane one, he was determined to lead the race from the start. One of his plans was not get boxed in by the time the field had to cut in to lane one.

There was a pacer for this race. He didn't begin to lead Miller and the rest of the field until the 200m mark. Why is that? Miller was determined to be out in front and set the tone for this race. He wanted the race to be fast.

As they concluded their first lap, the pacer's journey came to an end. Miller's first 400m was in the low 53s. Miller continued to run this race against himself.

Underneath the sunset in Missouri, Miller started his second lap with about a 15m to 20m lead over the rest of the field.

As Miller continued to dominate this race, he came down the homestretch. The crowd was on their feet as they helped bring him home!

He crossed the finish line and broke the tape at a time of 1:50.03.
