Cuffe & Flood lead US runners at World XC

Faith Kipyegon of Kenya, running barefoot, broke away late in the race to claim the Junior Women’s World Cross Country Championships.     For the better part of the race a pack of nine runners had broken away and left the best of the rest of the field to battle for the supporting roles.   The lead groupalways included Faith Kipyegon, who was never far from the front.   The leaders went through the first 2K in a time of 6:09 and soon Nancy  Chepkwemoi began to push the pace.   It remained a battle between the Kenyans & Ethiopians, when at the 12:10 mark Kipyegon picked up the pace and was the nominal leader at the 4K with her time of 12:39, yet Purity Rionoripo upped the ante soon afterwards.

It was finally down to just five runners, when at the 15:41 mark  Janeth Kisa of Kenya of Kenya fell behind the leaders.   Now there were three Ethiopians (Genet Yalew, Azemra Gebru & Waganesh Mekasha) vying for the title with Kipyegon in their midst bearing the Kenyan standard.    Of that quartet Mekasha was the only one to really crack, as she was left behind just after 17 minutes had gone by in the race.   From that point onward there appeared to be little to choose between the final trio but Kipyegon finally gained a slight lead, when they neared the finish line and she would claim a one second victory with her time of 18:53.  Genet Yalew edged her team mate  Azemra Gebru for second with both sharing a time of 18:54.  In the team results Ethiopa edged Kenya 17 to 19 and Japan garnered third with 75 points.  The US placed 7th with 175 points.

Aisling Cuffe of Cornwall-on-Hudson, New York led the US young ladies with a 17th place finish overall.  The field up front was dominated by African runners with Kenya & Ethiopia along with Eritrea for a bit running in front.  Japanese runners Katsuki Ssuga & Tomoka Kimura placed 11th & 12th to finish as the top non-Africans, while Emelia Gorecka of Great Britain came home 15th to top the Europeans.      Cuffe finished just a bit back of Gorecka with a time of  20:15, while University of Washington freshman Katie Flood took 19th only three seconds further back.  Molly Grabill of California finished 28th in 20:40.  Sierra Vega of UCLA was forced to drop out a little after the nine minute mark in the race.  Julie Nacouzi & Hannah Valenzuela followed in 80th & 83rd places.

Craig Lutz of Texas & Ammar Moussa of California led the Junior men from the IS in spite of the fact that they are only prep runners.  Lutz earned 29th with his time of 24:02, while Moussa garnered 32nd with his time of 24:21.    Max Straneva, a freshman from Syracuse University, was the third US finisher (45th - 24:50) and Justin Vilhauer, a prep runner from Calfornia, claimed 47th only five seconds behind Straneva.  Ryan Poland placed 56th  to end the American scoring.

While the girls’ pace was brisk the early pace in the guys’ race was noted as “lightning” early on with the Kenyans all but challenging the Ethiopians to stay with them.   They backed off a bit after about 800 meters but even that did not last long.   By the four minute mark the announcer was noting a “savage pace” and the person most responsible was Geoffrye Kamworor of Kenya.   The 4K mark was reached in 11:04 and it was still the Kenyan leading the way.    Isiah Keoch moved into contention shortly after that but he, along with others, was unable to keep up and by the  fifteen minute mark only four runners still had a realistic chance of winning.   From that point onward Kamworor remained aggressive and one had to wonder, if he would have to finally give way to others but, when the finish line was in sight, it was the leader, who unleashed a ferocious kick, which left him without a challenge.  His winning time of 22:21 saw him finish six seconds ahead of Thomas Ayeko of Uganda & Patrick Mwikya of Kenya took third (22:32).  Kenya won the team battle  20 to 24 & Uganda placed third with 50 points.  The US  placed 8th with  153 points.
