Shelton Invitational

    Chancey Summers won high jump

Sean Keller threw the javelin 118-04 into a stiff wind.     The Heritage athlete, who broke the Washington State Record for the javelin last weekend at Centennial, backed up that performance in spite of throwing into the teeth of a very stiff wind, which was blowing directly in his face.     Tera Novy of Montesano went 45-03 in the shot & 130-02in the discus to win both events, as Shreese Daniels of Steilacoom earned second with 43-08 & 129-05.  For Novy the shot put mark is a personal best by almost three meters and it also established a new meet record.    Taylor Barrus of Skyview won the girls’ Javelin with 134-03 to defeat Courtney Fairhart of Eatonville (132-05) & Brittany Wendler (130-04) of Tumwater.   Johna McEllrath of Prairie placed 4th in the javelin with 125-01.   McEllrath also earned third in the shot put (40-08) and fifth in the discus (114-02).

Casey Burns of Kennedy was impressive in the boys' Triple with his 46--02.25.  Anthony Chaney of Timberline followed with 45—08 and Luke Plummer of Peninsula took third with 43-10.  Forrest Russell of Skyview claimed second in the long jump with 21-09.   Despite the wind Chancey Summers of Estacada went 5-05 in the high jump to top Katie Lord of Redmond, who was close behind with 5-04.  Tayler Fettig of Olympia & Kristen McMillan of Black Hills both cleared 5-02 but Fettig placed third with fewer misses.  Summer’s leap tied the meet record of 5-05 held by Patrice Pierre.   Logan Myers of Captal won the guys’ high jump with 6-04, as he defeated Tyson Stipic of Aberdeen & Grayson Anderson of Mountain View, who both went 6-02 with the former having fewer misses.

Carly Wilczynski of Emerald Ridge won the 800 Meters in 2:20.05 topping Madison Heilmann of Sehome  & Joanna Sowers of  North West Christian-Lacey, who both ran  2:22 & change.    Priscilla Timmons of Skyview ran alone to claim the 3200 Meter Run in a time of 11:06.76.  She was followed across the line by Sara Taferre of Skyview (11:29) & Sofia Kane of Olympia (11:35).     The race of the day pitted Wilczynski and Timmons in the mile.  The pair separated themselves early with a first lap of 73 and they then went through the 800M in 2:32.   Wilczynski, who had noted that she has needed to concentrate on her third lap, did just that as she opened a gap over Timmons, who had already run in the 3200M.   The split time of 3:50 gave her a five meter lead over Timmons and she extended that during the next lap to finish in a fine 5:05.14.  Timmons followed in 5:11, while Sehome runners Kate Hannah (5:14.64) & Katie Delanunt (5:19.81) placed third & fourth.

Izaic Yorks of Lakes won the Mile with a time of 4:20.14 defeating Miles Hille of Redmond (4:24) & Dallas Snider (4:24) of W F West.     Nathan McLaughlin of Puyallup finished 4th in 4:25.   Yorks came back later to win a stirring duel with Andy Robertson of W F West.   Yorks had held the lead for the better part of the race but Robertson caught and passed Yorks in the final stretch.  Somehow shortly before the finish Yorks made a final surge to nip Robertson at the wire 1:56.11 to 1:56.15.  Reed Henderson of Sehome followed only a bit behind timed in 1:57.61.    The 3200 Meter Run saw Dakota Parker of W F West triumph with a 9:25.90 clocking.  Curtis King of Peninsula placed second with 9:29 and Bereket Piatt of Port Townsend finished third in 9:33.  Skyview sophomore Colby Gilbert earned fourth in 9:40.

Cherish Morrison of Blaine had a banner day, as she was victorious in the 100 meter dash (12.20), the 200M (25.80) & the 400 Meter Run (57.82).   Indigo Williams of North Kitsap followed Morrison home in both the shorter races with times of 12.48 & 26.59, while Alana Vann followed the pair in both the 100M & the 200M.   Brenna Thompson of Shelton garnered second in the 400M with 58.55 and was chased across the line by Rebecca Lindgren of Klahowya, who ran 58.75.   Douglas Sudberry of Timberline claimed victory in the 100M (10.89) and the 200M (22.92).   Quadelle Satterwhite was given the same time in the 200M but was placed second and he followed Sudberry in the 100M with 10.94.

Brad Michael of Skyview won the 400 Meter Run with a  48.99 clocking, while Derrick Jones of Rogers-Puyallup took second with 49.59.  Marquin Russell of Lakes (49.67) and DeVon Dansby of Timberline (49.99) placed third & fourth.    Daniel Zmuda of Steilacoom won the 110 Meter hurdles in 15.1 and then placed second (40.17) behind Rashon Smith (39.96) of Timberline.   Reagon Colyer of North Kitsap won the 110 meter hurdles with 15.54 and placed third in the 300 hurdles with 45.55.  Rachel McQuivey of Skyview won the 300H in 44.81 & established a new meet record in the process, while Alissa Brooks-Johnson of Pe Ell finished 2nd in the 300H.

The Skyview boys’ 4 by 400 Relay team won its event with a time of 4:23.34 but it was not quite enough to overcome Timberline’s overall lead in the team scoring, as Timberline won 49 to 47 over Skyview, while Rogers-Puyallup earned third with 46 points.   The girls’ team race was also close but the Skyview girls had other goals as well.   They have had a mostly successful season in spite of a very questionable DQ and they were well aware that the Bellarmine Girls had run 4:00.65 at the Jesuit Relays on Friday night.   Madison Lanford led off with a 59.2 first leg & was followed by Priscilla Timmons, who was timed in 60.7.   Rachel Shirley made sure there was breathing room for Rachel McQuivey, as if she needed it, by storming through a 58.7 split.   Skyview partisans looked on anticipating something special as McQuivey sped through the last lap and her split of 59.0 delivered it in spades:  new school record, new meet record & the fastest time in the state this year.   The time was a scintillating 3:57.11 and it also secured a team title as the Storm topped Sehome 66 to 62.

It was a fine day with only the weather failing fully to contribute.   Fans were treated to a well-run meet with some quality marks and fine competition.    For most teams it was a fitting end to the invitational season as everyone looks to league championships and districts with an eye to the final State meet.  Good luck to everyone in the closing weeks of the 2011 campaign.
