Nortwest Review including Kent Invitational

Spring break may have been accompanied by inclement weather but it did not prevent a number of athletes to post strong early season marks in track.   Without a doubt no one was more impressive in the area than Marcus Dickson of White River, who raced to an excellent 1:50.89 in the 800 Meter Run.  Marcus’ time is the current best in the nation.  Finishing second in that race was Korey Krotzer, who usually competes in longer events, yet still ran a fine 1:55 on Saturday.

In other boys’ action at the Kent Meridian Invitational Joe Knight of Olympic won the High Jump with 6-06 and was followed by Dakota Hightower of Curtis, whose mark was 6-04.  The 400 Meter had some swift action with Tumwater’s Andrew Brown edging Kris Durr of Emerald Ridge 49.24 to 49.30.   The 1600M went to Curtis King of Peninsula, who went 9:37.52, as he crossed the finish line with a comfortable lead of six seconds over Talon Abernathy of Kentridge.   Kentridge runner Sterling Bath ran 4:26 in the 1600 Meter Run with Matt Lunn of Olympic placing second.

In young men’s Shot Put competition a mark of over fifty is the standard bench mark for quality and the Kent event had two throwers better that standard.   Jack Schiedman of Roosevelt went 53-03 to claim first ahead of Isaac Seumalo of Corvallis, who tossed 50-10.   Jordan Pulu of Federal Way had a mark of 48-08 placing third.   The Discus crown went to Phuong Truong of Mt. Tahoma, whose 155-02 topped Walker Williams of Tacoma Baptist.   In other field event action among the guys Josh Smith of Kent Meridian won with 12-06, while the Long Jump saw a close contest between Cameron Braithwaite of Port Angeles & D J May of Federal Way 21-06 to 21-03.

Zachary Smith topped the field in the 100 Meter Dash, when the Olympic athlete ran 11.13.   Keivarae Russell of Mariner scored in the 200M (22.33).   Kaid Tipton (14.93) of Kentridge edged Abu Kamara of KM (14.96) of KM in the High Hurdles, while Reggie Collins of Kentridge led the way in the long hurdle event with 14.96.

Brandi Williams of Auburn Riverside was a double winner in the girls’ events scoring victories in the 100 with 12.62 and the 200M with 26.00.   Malika Waschmann of Corvallis had a fine winning time of 49.13 in the 400 Meter Run, while Anne Torfin of Tumwater placed second in 60.36.   Peyton Johnson of Lakeside was a close third in 60.95.    Cassidy Brown of Auburn Riverside earned a hard-fought victory in the 800 Meter run with a time of 2:21.53.  Brigit Behrens of Corvallis, who had won at Canby on Wednesday, placed second in 2:22.31, which gave her a bit of a margin over her team mate Justine Feist, who ran 2:22.90.  Behrens ran the first leg in the victorious 4 by 800 Meter Relay, which Feist anchored.  Their winning time was 9:52, which won by over half a minute.   Malika Waschmann ran the second leg and Kinda Butt contributed as the third runner in an event we’d love to see at State along with a Distance Medley.

Girl’s distance action evidenced fine competition up front with Lily Engelbrechkt of Bishop Blanchet topping Rachel Atwood of AR:   11:00 to 11:04.   The 1600M was even closer as Rose Christen of Central Kitsap edged marina Roberts of Kingston.  Both runners were credited with versions of 5:12.

Alyx Toeaina of Kentwood won both the Shot Put and the Discus (131-08).  Her SP was a fine 40-07, while Quin Lawrence of Spanaway & Anne Waldrop of Corvallis placed second & third with 34-10 & 33-09 respectively.     Rachel O’ Neil of Auburn Riverside won the 100H in 15.39 and Reagan Colyer of North Kitsap scored in the Highs with 45.85.

There was some action from earlier that had been over-looked and a few marks  definitely need to be credited.
