Shorecrest has top jumps

SHORELINE - Shorecrest teammates Jesse Hoffman and Derek Clemmons finished 1-2 in the boys long jump Wednesday during the first day of the Class 3A District 1 track and field meet at Shoreline Stadium.

The meet concludes Friday.

Both Scots leapt 22 feet, but Hoffman\'s next-best jump was better than Clemmons\'.

Their efforts helped Shorecrest reach fourth place after five events with 25 points. Burlington-Edison athletes won two events, helping their team take the lead with 40 points.

Other state meet qualifiers from the Western and Cascade Conferences included: David Cortez of Cedarcrest, who was second in the javelin, and JD Peters of South Whidbey, who was third in the 1,600-meter run.

Burlington-Edison also took the lead after four events in the girls portion of the meet with 33.5 points. Shorecrest was second with 25.

The Scots\' Cora Speidel won the long jump with a leap of 16-8.75. Teammate Molly Gibson was second in the high jump at 5-0.

Other Wesco and Cascade Conference state qualifiers included: Emma Ruggiero of South Whidbey, who was third in the discus, and Lynnwood\'s Amanda Overdick, who was third in the high jump.

District 1 2A Championships: At Burlington, Adam Brisben led Lakewood to the 2A District 1 championship shooting a two-day total of 157. Meridian\'s Evan Needham medaled with a score of 155, grabbing the No. 1 seed at next week\'s state tournament.

District 1 2A Championship: At Burlington, King\'s Katie Lyon birdied the first hole of a sudden-death playoff versus Blaine\'s Tegan Bukowski, earning a No. 1 seed at next week\'s state tournament. Blaine, which won the team title, had four golfers qualify for state.
