Bronwyn Crossman broke the course record that she had previously set last year to highlight an impressive opening performance by the Squalicum cross country team against Meridian, Lynden Christian and Ferndale on Wednesday at Whatcom Falls Park.

The Squalicum junior raced to an easy victory on Saturday at Silver Lake Park and avenged last year\'s second-place finish. Crossman\'s time of 17 minutes, 39.62 seconds is the fastest since Sehome\'s Susannah Shaw set the 5K course record of 17:27 in 2002.
Last year\'s Class 3A state champions picked up right where they left off. The top-ranked Sehome boys\' cross country team won a showdown with No. 2-ranked Burlington Edison in a four-team meet at Lake Padden Park on Wednesday. The Mariners finished with 30 team points, while the Tigers had 32. Both teams are now Class 2A schools. Mount Baker was third with 90 points \"Burlington has an amazing team,\" Sehome coach Mark Kerr said in a phone interview. \"I think you can look ahead to the future and the state meet, and it\'s going to be close.\" Jake Riley led the way for Sehome, with a time of 13 minutes, 28 seconds. Anders Crabo placed third in 13:34.
