PASCO -- Victory was within reach for Mietra Smollack. She refused to let it slip away.
Smollack held off a late challenge from a persistent pursuer and won the Class 4A girls 1,600-meter run Saturday during the 3A/4A state track and field championships at Edgar Brown Stadium.
Smollack, a senior from Oak Harbor High School, withstood a push from Mead freshman Baylee Mires and won in a personal-record time of 4 minutes, 56.44 seconds. Mires crossed second in 4:57.1.
TACOMA -- By a margin of 50 points, the King's boys track team wrapped up the 1A state championship for the second year in a row with a score of 96. Coupeville came in fourth with 35.5 points.

PASCO -- Sometimes winning a state championship isn't quite enough.
J Hopkins blew past the other runners Saturday on his way to winning a state title in the 300-meter hurdles race for the second consecutive year. The Everett High School senior finished in a personal-record time and beat the second-place competitor by 1.42 seconds.
LAKE STEVENS -- It would appear -- at least for the Lake Stevens boys track team -- that the clothes do in fact make the man.
Jeff Page, the Vikings' head track coach, had been looking for one-piece purple and yellow speed suits for several years with little success.
He finally found a company that would custom-make the suits in Lake Stevens colors and his athletes debuted them Saturday with remarkable results.
Lake Stevens athletes won seven events and placed second in five others to win the boys team title at the Viking Classic for the third year in a row with 146 points -- downing second-place Arlington by more than 60 points.
SHORELINE -- Marysville-Pilchuck won eight of the 18 events contested at the Shoreline School District non-league girls track meet Thursday at Shoreline Stadium.
The Tomahawks finished with 95 points, while meet co-host Shorecrest finished second with 81.5. Monroe scored 58 and Shorewood rounded out the meet in fourth place with 42.5 points.

EVERETT -- The Stanwood girls used nine first-place finishes to place first Thursday night in a Wesco North tri-meet at Everett Memorial Stadium against Snohomish and host Cascade.
"For an opening meet there were a lot of good performances," Cascade coach Steve Bertrand said, "Stanwood scored across the board ... (And) they had nice depth."
Stanwood racked up 75 team points; Snohomish placed second, sweeping the high and long jumps to post 68, and Cascade used strong performances from Brittney Jones, Samantha Taylor and Breanna Huschka to finish third with 49.
EVERETT -- For an athlete's first track meet of the year, being in shape and working away at the offseason rust is often as much of an issue as the opposing competition.
"First meet of the year (everyone is) just trying to get the cobwebs off," Cascade coach Chris Crockett said.
Isaac Teichgrab was in midseason form, though, in Thursday's Wesco North meet at Everett Memorial Stadium, taking first in the 100- and 200-meter dashes and finishing second in the javelin with a throw of 147 feet.
The state championships are history, but elite local cross country competitors still have plenty to run for.
Thirteen boys and girls from area schools qualified for the 2007 Nike BorderClash based on their performances at last weekend's state meet at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco. The ninth edition of Border Clash, the annual all-star event that pits runners from Washington against foes from Oregon, is Nov. 17 at the Nike World Headquarters Campus in Beaverton, Ore.
SHORELINE - At what is billed as the largest all-boys track invitational in the Pacific Northwest, Vancouver's Evergreen High notched 64 points to garner the team title at the Shoreline Invite Saturday. Kentwood (54.5 points) and Sehome (47) finished well behind the Plainsmen.
In a welcome reversal of fortune from last year's torrential daylong downpour, milder temperatures and dry skies ruled the day as 69 teams and 845 athletes competed at the 20th annual event held at Shoreline Stadium.
PASCO - In one of the top track and field invitational events of the season, the Wesco Conference had two boys teams finish in the top five.
Lake Stevens (31 points) and Everett (28) finished fourth and fifth respectively at the Pasco Invitational at Edgar Brown Stadium Saturday.
EDMONDS - Another meet, another dominating performance by the Snohomish Panthers girls track team. Led by two wins by freshman Stephanie Cummings, the Panthers took first place in 12 of 18 events, defeating Cascade and Edmonds-Woodway Thursday in a non-conference meet at Edmonds Stadium. Snohomish finished with 102 points, Cascade 48 and Edmonds-Woodway 38.
