Ryan Prentice at Pasco Nov 11, 2007

  Ryan Prentice Mt.Rainier 3A Champ 16:01  Ryan Prentice ran away with the 3A title at the State Championship meet at Pasco.  He finished with a 4 sec lead over Andrew Kimpel of the #3 nationally ranked North Central.  He finished 17 to 30 seconds ahead of the rest of the top flight. 

Cross-Country State Championships 2007: Pasco, WA Nov 08, 2007

 Last Saturday, November 3, 2007, the Washington state cross-country championships were held at Sun Willows golf course in Pasco, WA. The day was a disappointment for many but a wondrous event for others. Ruby Roberts, sophomore, of Kingston High School took first in the Girls’ 2A division with a time of 18:39.The day was also a great victory for Bronwyn Crossman, senior, of Squalicum High School, who defended her title in the 3A Girls’ division with a time of 18:46.Miles Unterreiner, senior, of Gig Harbor High School also found great personal victory in Pasco this year, when he won the Boys’ 4A race with a time of 15:39.

                               Miles Unterreiner 4A CHAMP 15:39Mile Unterreiner participated, witnessed and enabled the completion of a project he started 4 years ago.In a year in which anyone could do anything, in the race where they were all there, Miles opened and shut the door.Miles entered the 4A championship race on Saturday , fully aware that he was among a list of 6 or 7 runners who could win the title.    He ran against most of the field in meets and invitationals for the past 4 years.  Jonathan Lafler, Rob Webster, Kelly Lynch, Joey Bywater, Kevin Rosaaen, all these runners had the right game and new how to bring it when it counted.  Saturday, Nov 3, 2007, at 3:45 it did count.

Andrea Nelson 4A Champ 18:26Andrea Nelson , sophomore from Shadle Park again showed the 4A girls of Washington State that she is the athlete to beat!Andrea ran the 4A Girls championship contest , held at Sun Willows Golf Course on a Sunny Nov 3 day, like she has run every race this year.  She laid out the race early, fast lead, fast middle, fast end. The plan worked.  Andrea posted the fasted course time of the day in all races.

Olivia Thomas knows all about it.Last year Thomas was the runner-up in the Class 1A girls race at the state cross country championships. The winner was a senior, which made Thomas the favorite this season.A few days ago the junior from King's High School started getting increasingly nervous leading up to this year's state meet."I was thinking, 'Oh my gosh! I have a race (Saturday) and all the expectations are on me, and everyone's expecting me to do really well," Thomas said.Despite her worries, Thomas sure lived up to the hype.

The state championships are history, but elite local cross country competitors still have plenty to run for.Thirteen boys and girls from area schools qualified for the 2007 Nike BorderClash based on their performances at last weekend's state meet at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco. The ninth edition of Border Clash, the annual all-star event that pits runners from Washington against foes from Oregon, is Nov. 17 at the Nike World Headquarters Campus in Beaverton, Ore.

PASCO — Just like the rest of the field, Olivia Thomas' lungs couldn't keep up during the final stretch. "I thought I was having an asthma attack or something," the King's junior said. But she powered through the pain and won by 36 seconds, validating her label as the Class 1A favorite with a 19:16 winning time. Last year, Thomas finished second to a senior. The pressure and expectations as the favorite wore hard throughout season, but they only made the win more satisfying

By MICHAEL MCLAUGHLINP-I REPORTER PASCO -- Mount Rainier senior Ryan Prentice said he isn't close to being in top running shape this season because injuries have cut his training short the past month. What Prentice wasn't short on was his will to win as he captured the 3A boy's cross-country title at the Sun Willows course in Pasco.Prentice covered the 3.1-mile course in 16:01, holding off junior Andrew Kimpel of North Central to win by four seconds."As I got closer to the finish I thought everybody was sneaking up on me," Prentice said. "I looked back with about 100 yards and saw I had a solid lead, but I ran the rest of the race like someone was two seconds ahead of me."The North Central boys, one of the top teams in the nation, took the 3A team title with 36 team points. Seattle Prep took second with 110 points.

PASCO 2007 - They Run To Win- Nov 08, 2007

When teams are training during the summer, state is the ultimate goal.  The chance to compete in this race will drive an athlete out of bed at five in the morning to run 10 miles.  But at the end of a season only a few teams will achieve their goal.  Many teams are satisfied with just qualifying, but teams like North West Christian (1B/2B), Royal (1A), and Mead (4A) are not satisfied with just qualifying they run to win.

— Bronwyn Crossman didn’t need to look over her shoulder this time. The Squalicum senior easily won her second straight Class 3A state cross country meet individual title on Saturday at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco. “She’s the best I’ve ever coached,” said Storm coach Tim Irvin, who began coaching in 1977. “She’s tough as nails.” Crossman was never challenged in the 3-kilometer race. She broke away from the pack at the one-mile mark and had opened an insurmountable 30- second lead shortly after two miles.

Decker places fifth at state cross country meet; PTHS team is sixth Nov 06, 2007

The Port Townsend High School boys' cross country team placed sixth at the state 2A meet Nov. 3 in Pasco. Junior Quinton Decker was fifth individually (16:31), and freshman Bereket Piatt was 17th (17:11).Justin Rose of Colville won the 3.1-mile race (16:02), and Abdi Gire of Foster High - who edged Decker for the West Central District title - was second at state (16:19).The sixth-place finish was the highest coach Kevin Sanford has achieved with a boys' team in his 13 years of coaching, he said. The boys' team was seventh in 2005 and 2003. PTHS girls placed second in 2004 and fourth in 2003.

By FRANK PURDY YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC As defending runner-up, West Valley's Lisa Olander sped into Saturday's state girls 3A cross-country meet intent on picking up that one and elusive place. Her moving target was defending champion Bronwyn Crossman of Squalicum, who was equally intent on keeping her top spot. Crossman pulled away from Olander and Chelsea Burns of Holy Names in the second half of the 5,000-meter course to repeat as state champion in a time of 18 minutes, 46 seconds.

Team leaders Cody VanDeBrake, Bryan Simison and Ryan Chapman were separated by a scant three seconds at the finish of the Class 4A state cross country meet, and Derrick Thomas and Craig Johnston were 30 seconds back of them. But at state there was no mercy in that tiny gap.

The Klickitat senior was singed twice at last spring's state track meet, in the 800 and 1,600, by the closing speed of his Odessa rival in a pair of 1-2 finishes that saw Cronrath on top.

Lake Roosevelt senior Shan Birdtail placed 65th in the state cross country meet Saturday in Pasco.Birdtail was the lone Raider making it to the state meet. He qualified by placing 15th the previous week in regional action at Chewelah.

 Sehome girls win second straight title DOUG PACEY The Belling HeraldSehome is on the verge of a becoming Class 2A cross country dynasty. The senior-less Mariners captured their second straight state championship on Saturday at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco. “This is the cherry on top of the season,” said sophomore Annie Moore, who placed second with a time of 19 minutes, 11 seconds.

Omak girls race to ninth at state Nov 05, 2007

By Al Camp Chronicle staff      Omak’s Kaitlynn Pecha ran the race of her life to finish fifth overall at state cross country Nov. 3 at Sun Willow Golf Course in Pasco.      The Pioneer girls’ team finished ninth.      Pecha stayed with a lead pack before covering the 3.1-mile (5-kilometer) course in 20 minutes, three seconds. The time bested her time of 20:24 from last year, when she finished ninth.      “Kaitlynn always runs her best when she has competition,” said her mother and Omak’s coach, Melody Pecha. “Her time this year was 21 seconds faster than last year. Through her four years of high school cross country she has improved each year.”      Kaitlynn Pecha not only beat Chelan’s Gabby Guillen (9th, 20:23) but also Lakeside’s Kayloni Jones (8th, 20:20), who had topped Pecha at regionals by 11 seconds.      They were the top three girls from the region.

Farrar takes fourth at state Nov 05, 2007

This time around, Emily Farrar said she enjoyed the drive back. “There were no tears,” she said. “It was a very, very good ride home.” The senior co-captain rounded out a solid career as a Spartan harrier with a fourth place finish at the 3A state cross country meet at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco Saturday. Farrar posted a time of 19:28 – one second behind West Valley’s Lisa Oleander and ten seconds behind Holy Names’ Chelsea Burns. It’s the highest finish by a Bainbridge girls’ cross country runner since Rachel Belt took third in 2003.
