Northwest Review - Week 12

                                                                             Seamus Camp

Our prayers go out to the family of Seamus Camp, who was a sophomore at Park High, who passed away on October 28.   He was competing in the Montana State meet the previous weekend and collapsed, while competing in the race.   Although he was revived in the ambulance on the way to the hospital he unfortunately was unable to recover.     His parents sent a note of thanks for the outpouring of good will to the Montana Cross Country web site, which I’d like to think was a note to the entire running community.    In it they noted that  ”as far as we are concerned he died on that golf course”, where the race was held.   We take for granted the struggle to win & the pain in loss but Seamus’ story reminds us of how fragile life can be and there is a bigger picture.   Keep Seamus in your thoughts when next you take to the trails and remember him and his family in your prayers.

                                                                Idaho State Meet

There was much to take in at the meet held at the Eagle Island Course north of Boise.   Seniors Dallin Farnsworth of Highland & Emily Nist of Bishop Kelly went out in style as both claimed championships.   Dallin’s time of 15:40 was ever so close to the overall State record and was easily a divisional record, as he claimed his second straight title.   Emily did Dallin one better in claiming her third 4A title and in so doing led her team to yet another State championship.   Sierra Manzer of Kuna placed second behind Emily & Mikesell Clegg of Jerome earned third.  The Bishop Kelly cause was well supported  by Briana Tiffany & Rebecca Lassere, who secured fifth & sixth places respectively.    Dallin was pursued in the 5A race by Thomas Rigby of Boise & Cody Curtis of Coeur d’Alene, who led his team to victory.

Emily Hamlin of Boise topped the 5A girls with her clocking of 18:36, as she led her team to its fifth title in the last few years.   Mikayla Malaspina of Vallivue & Josie Brown of CDA garnered 2nd & 3rd respectively, while Rachel Sullivan of Centennial & Jordan Mathes of Mountain View came in 4th & 5th, while Sam Mckinnon, one of the prerace favorites struggled due to a foot injury, which we hope is not too severe.

One never knows with any distance race but we may have just witnessed the beginning of the Elijah Armstrong era in Idaho cross country.   The freshman pressed the pace and upset defending champion Erik Harris on the way to the 4A title with a time of 15:55.    A time like that makes it believable that he could qualify for the prestigious Foot Locker nationals as a freshman.  Only three other male runners have ever accomplished that feat (Bryan Dameworth, Jorge Torres & Futsum Zeinasellassie) in the thirty plus years of the race with Jorge being the only four-time qualifier among the guys.    The cool thing is that Idaho has the ability to qualify three guys this year, which would also be quite special.   Finishing third was Jake Powell of Hillcrest, who ran 16:31, while Haydin Herndon & Sam Levora of Sandpoint took the next two places.

James Withers of Snake River ran 16:41 to triumph in the 3A race& Gage Moore was second.  Tyler Jaszkowiak of Challis was victorious in the 2A race topping Dylan Crevelt of Cascade.   Alice Keller of Salmon ran away from the field in the girls’ 3A race with her time 18:58 & Marquita palmer of Weiser was second.   Rachel Youren of Gooding (19:05) scored in the girls’ 2A race, as Hannah Farnes of Soda Springs followed.
