Boys take top spot in Tonasket

Lake Roosevelt's boys' cross country squad picked off first place in the opening run of the season Saturday in Tonasket.

Five teams took part. Curlew, Tonasket, Oroville and Liberty Bell all fielded teams.

Jessica Barry, Lake Roosevelt's lone girl entry, finished seventh.

Head coach Gary Darnold said team members ran well.

"The course was hilly and that took its toll in stamina," he said.

Lake Roosevelt team members placed third, fourth and fifth, enough to take the overall score and the title.

Josh Bird placed third, Sam Halvorsen placed fourth and Zach Pryor placed fifth. Bird and Halvorsen are seniors and Pryor is a sophomore.

It takes five runners to make up a team.

Darnold said Lake Roosevelt girls will field a full team Saturday when they travel to Moses Lake.

"The course there is in a state park and it isn't as hilly as it was in Tonasket," Darnold noted.

Several Raider runners were ineligible for Saturday's event because they didn't have the required number of practices.

This week, Raider runners should be 100 percent eligible.

"We will be facing some bigger schools Saturday and this should be a good test for our runners," Darnold said.
