For one Kitsap runner, it was business as usual. For another, it was an impressive debut at the state cross country meet Saturday at Sun Willows Golf Course.
Klahowya junior Sierra Cook took eighth in the Class 2A girls meet, her third top-10 finish at state. Cook finished in the top five the previous two years, but the Class 2A field was expanded this season because of reclassification. Sehome, a Class 3A school last year, won the team title. Klahowya, which finished fourth last year, took 12th. Sequim's Stephanie Marcy won the girls title as the Wolves took fourth.
North Kitsap's Ruby Roberts took 13th in the Class 4A girls race, an impressive showing for a freshman. Cody Bradwell was the top finisher for the NK boys, who took 11th.
Gig Harbor won the girls title for the second straight year. In the most anticipated team showdown of the day, Ferris of Spokane, with three runners in the top six, won its fourth straight team title, beating cross-city running rivals Mead 51-27. Ferris and Mead are two of the top teams in the nation. A Spokane team has won the boys big-school team title every year since 1988. Central Valley gave Spokane a 1-2-3 finish.
