RACE PREVIEW:
4A Championship
US#3 JOEL E. FERRIS | VS | US#1 HENRY M. JACKSON |
US#1 Henry Jackson travels from the west to meet US#3 Joel Ferris on neutral ground at the Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco, Washington. Storming through the season, Henry Jackson has been dominant. Running 10-20 second 1-5 spreads and averaging near and under 16 minutes for 5000 meters the Timberwolves find themselves atop the national rankings. Pre-season rankings placed the Ferris Saxons as #1 in the nation. They have been undefeated on the season with the exception of the Stanford Invitational where they lost to several top ranked teams. Rebounding and regrouping they have spent the month averaging sub 16 minutes as a team for 5000 meters. Most recently, they averaged 15:58 to claim the CBBN / 4A Championship in a decade low 32 points while Jackson scored 21 in the Region meet across the state.
At last years race Mead was victor with henry Jackson second and Ferris third. It was Ferris and Jackson separated by four points. So it is with this season that the winner of this race will head to the NXN Northwest Championships battle tested against top national competition. Ferris has battled all season against US#6 North Central defeating them by narrow margins all season. The individual championship should be a showdown between Saxon Adam Thorne and Central Kistap senior US#11 Shane Moskowitz. Moskowitz has been near the 15 minute 5k mark all season while Thorne has been in the mid 15:30's.
Pre-race predictions: Boys Team- Ferris over Jackson 46-52; Boys Individual- Shane Moskowitz, Central Kitsap; Girls Team-Gig Harbor; Girls Individual-Baylee Mires, Mead.
3A Championship
US#8 SHADLE PARK | VS | US#15 GLACIER PEAK |
US#15 Glacier Peak travels from the west to meet US#8 Shadle Park on neutral ground at the Sun Willows Golf course. These two teams have been on a collision course the past three months. Led by two-time state champion Andrea Nelson, Shadle has been undefeated on the season to include winning the Montana super meet, Mountain West Classic. Glacier Peak on the other hand has been to Stanford where they came home champions. They then faced US#4 Jesuit at the Sunfair invitational losing convincingly. What is clear are that these two programs are good and on any given day perhaps the best. But who is better? Is it the front pack strength of the Highlanders or the team depth of the Grizzlies? The individual title will be a challenge for defending state champion Nelson as Glacier Peak's Amy Eloise-Neale and fellow Shadle teammate Kendra Weitz will contest.
The defending NXN National Champion US#6 North Central seem to have worked out the kinks. They have been nothing less than dominant the past month as the have challenge 4A standout and US#3 Ferris. At last weeks CBBN Region meet they averaged 15:55 for the second week in a row over 5000 meters. Led largely by the breakout performances of Ben Johnston. Within the division there are no contendars.
Pre-race predictions: Boys Team- North Central; Boys Individual- Ben Johnston, North Central; Girls Team-Shadle over Glacier 56-66; Girls Individual-Amy Eloise-Neale, Glacier Peak.
