Belen Jesuit Preparatory freshman Marcelo Mantecon isn't just the fastest freshman in the country this season, but the fastest high school freshman in history. Sophia Rodriguez, a freshman at Mercer Island High School, is the third-fastest girls athlete in her class in history.
Mantecon's top time of 14:48 is five seconds better than the former freshmen best, which was accomplished by Keegan Smith in 2021. Rodriguez's time of 16:49 is just a second away from London Culbreath's all-time best from 2016.
Mantecon is one of only three freshman to ever dip under 15:00 in their first year of high school competition. Rodriguez is one of 14 freshmen girls in history to go under 17 minutes.
