Marcus Chambers Wins National Title

Sunday was the last day of action at the Junior Olympics & Marcus Chambers certainly saved his best for last, as he triumphed in the 400 Meters.   The new National Champion zipped to a speedy clocking of 46.18.   Chambers had won the State 3A title for Henry Foss with a time of 47.36, which was his PR at the time, so Chambers certainly rose to the occasion on Sunday.   Marcus, incidentally, is only a junior and will return as a prep runner next year.   Marcus also placed second in the Young Men’s 200 Meter Dash, which was run on Saturday.  Chambers ran a fine 21.06 and followed Aldrich Bailey, who was not all that far off the national record with his mark of 20.78.  Quincy Watts holds the mark with 20.50.

West Seattle High’s Kris Tollefson placed 8th in the Young Women’s 400 Meter Run with a time of 57.59.  Running for the Seatown Express the senior backed up her second place effort in the 3A State Meet.

One of the surprises of the meet had to be the effort of Brittany Bennett, who also competed for Seatown.    The Kennedy senior had placed fifth at State in the 3A division of the 800 Meter Run with a time of 2:16, but she had spent the better part of the season running in various sprint races, especially in the relays.  Brittany had run only three times in the 1600 Meters all season with a best time of 5:38 but on Sunday, Bennett found the 1500 Meters very much to her liking placing fifth in a time of 4:57.31.   It was quite a debut on the national scene.
