PROSSER -- A year ago, the only event in which Keefe Brockman qualified for state was the long jump.

This year, the Hanford junior failed to advance out of Friday\'s Mid-Valley League district meet in the event. Instead, he walked away with titles in the triple and high jumps, and as he stepped off the awards podium in the Art Fiker Stadium infield after receiving his first-place medal in the latter, he smiled.

\"Kind of ironic, isn\'t it?\" said Brockman, who earlier in the day received his award for being selected MVL Field Athlete of the Year. \"But what can you say? My day started out pretty bad, but you\'ve got to let bygones be bygones and get done what needs to be done.\"

Brockman jumped 43 feet, 1 1/2 inches on his second attempt in the triple jump prelims. When it became clear that would stand up as the winning mark, he scratched his final two jumps in the finals to focus his attention on his battle with a pair of Ellensburg jumpers in the high jump.

Brockman cleared 6-2 on his first jump, and when neither Bulldog matched, he had his second title of the day and back-to-back in this event.

\"Well, not having the long jump, now I\'ll have fresh legs for the high jump,\" Brockman said. \"I\'m hoping for a breakout regional meet this year.\"

Brockman was the lone double-winner from the region. In all, five area athletes won six titles, and three meet records were set. West Valley swept the team titles. The top seven individuals and five relay teams qualified for next weekend\'s 3A Eastern Regionals in Richland.

Prosser junior Nectaly Barbosa, still showing the effects of an IT band injury in his right knee, ran only the 800 meters and the anchor leg of the 4x400 relay, forgoing a chance to defend his 3A state title in the 1,600.

Barbosa avenged a loss eight days ago to good friend Isak Bergman of Ellensburg in the 800, passing Bergman with 250 meters to go and holding him off to win in 1 minute, 53.42 seconds.

\"I hadn\'t thought of revenge,\" said Barbosa, the boys Track Athlete of the Year. \"Once you start thinking like that, that\'s when your body starts to break down. I just had to focus on the race.\"

Barbosa originally wanted to run the 400, 800, 1,600 and 4x400 at districts, but his coaches talked him out of it. \"It was a good decision, because obviously I\'m not ready,\" he said.

He added that he was only at about 30 percent \"because of all the training that I\'ve lost,\" but that he hopes to be healthy enough to defend his 800 state title and make a run at the state record of 1:49.41 in two weeks in Pasco.

Another Prosser junior, Hilary Moore, broke the meet record in the pole vault, clearing 10-6. She also threw a personal best 111-5 in the javelin to place second.

\"I came out here and just wanted to get into regionals,\" said Moore, one of three girls to share Field Athlete of the Year honors.

Teammate Breanne Wilson was a surprise winner in the girls long jump, going a career-best 16-10 3/4 on her first jump of the day.

\"I thought I would need (a PR) to win,\" she said. \"I did that on my first jump, and I think I put more pressure on everyone else. I was just relieved.\"

Kamiakin senior Kyle Schauble broke the all-time Mid-Columbia record in the 300 hurdles, leading the Braves boys to a one-point victory over Richland at the Big Nine district championships at Zaepfel Stadium in Yakima.

Schauble, who will run for Washington State next year, won the race in 37.38 seconds, besting the mark of 37.78 set by Trent Ady of Pasco 10 years ago. Schauble also won the 110 hurdles and long jump.

Moses Lake junior Aaron Wafer also was a triple winner, sweeping the 100, 200 and 400 and finishing second to Schauble in the long jump.

Richland cruised to the girls team title, thanks in large part to junior Kayla McKeirnan, who won the 100, 200 and 400 -- all in area-best times -- and also placed second in the long jump to Kamiakin senior Michaela Haggett. Haggett also won the 100 hurdles.
