Western Washington University's Monika Gruszecki won the women's javelin with a meet record and personal-best throw of 156-11 in opening-day action Friday evening at the 10th annual Great Northwest Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships being held at McArthur Field on the campus of host Western Oregon University. Gruszecki's mark was the nation's second longest of the year. Placing second at 149-5 was national leader Brittany Aanstad from Seattle Pacific, who has thrown 159-4 this spring. The old meet standard was 154-9 by Western Oregon's Caroline Powers in 2010. Gruszecki, who had a national automatic qualifying mark of 150-6 in early April, won the national title in 2007 and placed second in 2008. The Vikings' Jordan Welling and Bennett Grimes had a one-two finish in the men's 10,000. Welling's winning time of 30:25.75 was a meet record and Grimes was clocked in 30:34.41. The old GNAC standard was 31:11.98 by Saint Martin's John Riak in 2007.

Two seniors, Sarah Porter and Jordan Welling, were voted the most valuable player awards for women and men, respectively, by their teammates at the Western Washington University cross country awards ceremony Wednesday. Even though she graduated from Mount Baker High School and grew up running cross country in the Acme area, Western Washington University junior Sierra Brisky said she's never competed in the snow before. The 2010 cross country season begins for seven of the 10 Great Northwest Athletic Conference teams this week in meets at Fairbanks, Billings, Bellingham and Honolulu. Western Washington, which is the defending GNAC men's champion, opens its season at home in the Lake Padden Relays. Western Oregon and a partial team from Seattle Pacific will also compete. The Falcons will also send athletes to Fairbanks to compete in a pair of meets on Thursday and Saturday along with Northwest Nazarene and host Alaska Fairbanks. Western Washington University's Sarah Porter won the women's 10,000 meters at the NACAC Under-23 Track and Field Championships on Friday morning at the Ansin Sports Complex. Representing Team USA, Porter crossed the finish line in 36:15.51. Mexico's Dianna Cisneros was second in 36:59.66. Team USA runner Amanda Goetschius was third in 37:18.81 and Mexico's Beatriz S. Hernandes was fourth in 39:43.05.

A bid for a personal-best time along with near 90-degree heat and severe humidity proved too much for Western Washington University's Sarah Porter, who did not finish in the women's 10,000 meters at the USA Championships being held at Drake Stadium. Porter, who just completed her junior season at Western, bowed out around the 4,000-meter mark.

Spokane To Host 2011 & 2013 NCAA Division II Cross Country Nationals Jun 16, 2010

The 2011 and 2013 NCAA Division II Cross Country National Championships will be held in Spokane, Wash., the NCAA Division II Championship Committee announced earlier this week. The championships will be co-hosted by the Great Northwest Athletic Conference and the Spokane Regional Sports Commission in partnership with the Plantes Ferry Athletic Complex and the Mirabeau Park Hotel. The 2011 championships will be held Saturday, Nov. 19 at the Plantes Ferry Sports Complex. The 2013 championships will be Saturday, Nov. 23 at the same site.

Physically spent from the competition, heat and humidity, Harrison scored just 40 points in the 1,500 meters with a time of 7:16.62 for a 6,142 total.

Passing two runners in the last 600 meters, Western Washington University's Sarah Porter placed second by less than three seconds in the women's 10,000 meters Thursday at the 2010 NCAA Division II National Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Porter was clocked in 34:49.60, trailing only Tanya Zeferjahn from Queens NC, who crossed the finish line in 34:46.59.

Western Washington University is sending seven athletes, three of whom will compete in two events, to the 2010 NCAA Division II National Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 27-29 at Charlotte, North Carolina. The field was announced today. Two Vikings are making return visits to nationals. Going for the third time is Sarah Porter, who will compete in the women's 5,000 and 10,000 meters. Making a second straight trip is Jordan Welling, who is participating in the men's 5,000 and 10,000. Alex Harrison won the men's javelin with a school and meet record toss of 208-5 that met the NCAA Division II automatic national qualifying standard as Western Washington University took its first men's title in five years and just the second crown overall at the ninth annual Great Northwest Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships which ended Saturday at McArthur Field on the campus of host Western Oregon University. Harrison scored 24 of the Vikings' winning point total of 197, placing first in the decathlon on May 3-4 and fifth in the shot put Friday with a personal best of 47-7 3/4. Central Washington was second in the eight-school field with 160 points, followed by pre-meet favorite Western Oregon with 155. Western was second in the women's standings with 163 points, its highest finish at a GNAC meet. Favored Seattle Pacific won its fourth crown with 214 points.
