Sept. 1, 2006

MOSCOW, Idaho -- Washington State freshman Dan Geib, running unattached, won the men\'s 4-mile race and freshman Chelsea VanDeBrake, also running unattached placed second in the women\'s 4k race at the Idaho Jamboree Cross Country Meet, Friday evening at the University of Idaho Golf Course.

In team scores Friday, the WSU men defeated the University of Idaho 15-48 and defeated Gonzaga 15-50.

\"The outstanding performance was from freshman Dan Geib who pulled away at the end for the win,\" WSU Head Cross Country Coach Jason Drake said. \"He did a phenomenal job and I think this is one of our best teams ever. To have a freshmen step up in there and run with the older guys is a great job by him so we are very excited about that.\"

Sophomore Woody Favinger, from Bellingham, Wash., was the first uniformed Cougar across the line followed by sophomore Drew Polley and juniors Alex Grant, Andrew Jones and Chris Williams.

\"Everything went well according to plan,\" Drake said. \"A lot of runners were running unattached and not in uniform but I was hoping they would all run together as a team. It was good just to see who from the younger ones were able to keep up. Overall everything went according to plan so I was very happy with that.\"

VanDeBrake, from Yakima, Wash., led the pack for WSU as the women finished second through sixth in a very comfortable twilight meet. The Cougar women\'s team won 27-28 against the University of Idaho and defeated Gonzaga 18-38.

\"Freshman Chelsea VanDeBrake was able to hang in there with all the women and was able to pull away in the end,\" Drake said. \"She did a great job as a freshman to step in there and run with the older women so I am very excited about her.\"

Sophomore Meghan Leonard finished third for the cougar women\'s team followed by senior Kelly Ramirez, redshirt freshman Sara Trané, senior Kayle Peterson and sophomore Alyssa Modrell. Running unattached and rounding out the Cougar women\'s finishers were junior Isley Gonzalez, freshmen Stephanie Sipes and Lisa Egami, Becky Williams, sophomore Alyssa Modrell and freshman Piper Marshall.

\"Overall it was very good from both sides as they ran exactly according to plan,\" Drake said. \"I was pleased with all the efforts.\"

Next up for the Cougars is the Sundodger Invitational at Lincoln Park in Seattle Sept. 16.
