Senior Send-Off: Zac Garrard, Owensboro

Zac Garrard is a 2013 Owensboro graduate.  He finished off his high school career with two regional titles and a 3rd place finish in the 800m at the Kentucky State Track Meet.

What was your most memorable race/event?

1600m 2011 State 3A Championships. Falling but standing back up to finish 3rd.

Who would you consider your biggest competition over your four years?

Many runners from the Daviess County area including Alex O’Bryan (Apollo), Cameron Quisenberry (Daviess County), and Daniel Southard (Daviess County).

What was your greatest accomplishment?

Finishing 15th at the 2010 State XC championships to make the podium. I set that goal during the summer prior to the season, and it was a great feeling to make that goal come true.

If you could do it all over again what would you change about your running career in high school?

I wouldn’t change much, just to train smarter to avoid injury that plagued my junior year.

What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?

Overcoming the negative mental aspects of an unsatisfactory junior season after a successful sophomore year. To bounce back this senior year and PR in many events was a huge relief.

What will you miss the most?

The group of friends that I have made through cross country and track as we all go our separate ways for college.

What advice you would give to younger athletes?

Stay in the moment, and take advantage of every opportunity presented before you. When obstacles come in your way, roll with the punches and learn from all experiences.

What influence has your coaches had with respect to your performance and overall life goals?

Chase after your dreams while you can. To not let fear or uncertainty hold back your potential.

What are your plans for college or joining the workforce next year?

Attending Gonzaga University in Spokane, WA as a member of the men’s cross country and track team. Also, a member of the Honors Program double majoring in Civil Engineering and Spanish.

Who would you like to say thank you to?

I would like to thank my family, coaches, friends, and anyone who has shown support for me throughout the years. Running isn’t the glamour sport that draws all the crowds, so it means a lot for all of those people who came to my races and supported my passion.

Is there anything else you'd like to add?

Although I will be racing in the Gonzaga blue and red in the upcoming years, I will always bleed red and black. It’s been a pleasure racing in the state of Kentucky, and I will be sure to represent my state to the best of my abilities.
