Nathan Hale's Hassan runs down Prosser's Barbosa in 800

Tri-City Herald

PASCO — Abdi Hassan came into Saturday's 46th Pasco Invitational track-and-field meet with no illusions of winning the 800 meters.

Not with Prosser's Nectaly Barbosa in the race. With Barbosa owning the nation's second-fastest time in the event this season, Hassan, a Nathan Hale senior, came into the race looking to get some speed work in as he prepares for next month's state meet.

But Barbosa was coming back from winning the 1,600 in a meet-record time of 4 minutes, 8.86 seconds earlier in the day, while Hassan was fresh. That made just the difference in the homestretch as Hassan outkicked Barbosa in the final 50 meters to win in 1:51.90.

Like in the 1,600, Barbosa — who was named the meet's Outstanding Male Athlete in leading the Mustangs to the team title — raced to the lead from the start. But unlike the 1,600, in which he raced unchallenged, Hassan dogged him around the track the entire two laps.

"He's the best in the nation, but he had run that 4:08, so I knew he had to be tired," said Hassan, who bettered his previous best in the 800 by more than 4 seconds. "I knew he wouldn't go all out, and that the winning time wouldn't be 1:48, 1:49. I knew it would be around 1:52, and I was capable of running that."

Renton senior Jason Harris won the javelin with a throw of 190 feet, 1 inch on his final attempt in the prelims.

Harris was hoping to go over 200 feet Saturday, but a combination of the drizzly conditions and a half-hour break for the opening ceremonies that came right after the prelims threw off his rhythm.

"It would have been a better competition if it hadn't been for that," Harris said.

Kamiak's Sean Beighton won the pole vault with a best of 14-9. Lake Steven's David McMurray won the long jump, going 22-4 ¼, and Rendel Jones of Everett won the triple jump with a best of 44-4 ¼.

In the girls meet, the best finish of the day came in the 3,200, where Redmond's Sarah Lord and Shadle Park's Andrea Nelson ran side-by-side down the homestretch, with Lord nipping Nelson at the wire by two-hundredths of a second in 10:54.52.

Rainier Beach's Charnay Combs bounced back from a seventh in the 100 to win the 200 in 25.70, and teammate Dyneeca Adams won the 400 in dominant fashion in 57.10.

Evergreen (Vancouver) won the team title, and Fife senior Angela Jensen was named Outstanding Female Athlete for sweeping the hurdles races and taking fifth in the 100.
