High Schools: River meet now for county supremacy

TIM MARTINEZ Columbian staff writerThis week's high school sports schedule in Clark County includes two events that showcase many of the top athletes in their respective sports.

On Friday at Columbia River High School, the Clark County Invitational track and field meet will be held.

The Clark County Invitational has been known in past seasons as the Twilight Invitational, one of the marquee events in the area during the spring sports season.

But in recent seasons, the Twilight meet as lost some of its appeal as many of the county's top athletes have bypassed the meet to compete in other high-profile events, like the Centennial Invitational over in Oregon.

By changing the meet's name to the Clark County Invitational, meet organizers are hoping to lure many of these athletes back to Columbia River on Friday, enticing them with the idea of a "county championship" much like events in other sports.

Another event that has served as a pseudo-county championship over the years is the Heritage Invitational girls tennis tournament, which will be held Friday and Saturday at Heritage High School.

This year, however the tournament looks more to be a preview of the Class 4A district tournament, as 3A and 2A schools like Columbia River, Camas, Hudson's Bay, Ridgefield and Washougal have scheduled league matches on Friday
