TACOMA -- Kayla Standish got a great start out of the blocks and ran one of the best 100-meter hurdle races of her life. She was under 15 seconds again -- 14.91 to be exact -- and in the final performance of her illustrious high school career the Ellensburg senior was clearly pleased with the effort.

Except, well, it was second place.

Certainly no shame in that, but it was Standish's third runner-up finish in a bag full of nine state medals accumulated over years.

"It was my last race, my last chance to win one," she said, smiling but obviously a bit disappointed early on the final day of the Class 2A state track meet. "It was a good race, too. I got over the first three (hurdles) well and I knew it would be a good one."

Standish was leading the midway in lane two, but in lane four was Othello's Courtney Kirkwood, Standish's hurdles rival who's headed to Washington State to be a heptathlete. Kirkwood seized the lead over the final two hurdles and won in 14.79, splitting her four meetings with the Gonzaga-bound Standish this season
