Ferris tops fast improving North Central

FERRIS AVERAGES 15:52, NORTH CENTRAL 15:57!!!

(2008 NATIONAL CHAMPION NORTH CENTRAL WAS AT 15:54!!)

Despite the gallant effort of the North Central boys to take the race, Ferris holds on to win by 3 (30-33).  North Central places 4 in the top 10, but Ferris places 5 in top 10 and tops the resurgent North Central squad.  Ben Johnson (15:12) startles onlookers with a 20 second victory over 4A state title contender Adam Thorne (15:32) and positions himself for a run at the 2009 state individual 3A title.  Ferris posts a 15:52 3-mile average over the 3 lap 6 hill course and improves from their earlier team average of 16:10 set at the Tracy Walters Invitational.  Likewise, the fast improving North Central boys improved from a 16:20 average set at the Tracy Walters Invitational to an amazing 15:57 with a 4 second spread between runners 2-4.  Despite early season hiccups at Bob Firman for North Central and Stanford for Ferris, both teams are right where they need to be at this junction of the season to make a run at State titles and to be nationally competitive, should they go the route of NXN.

Battle of the Freshman: Weitz tops Knight!

SHADLE PARK REMAINS UNDEFEATED ON SEASON.

With an impressive victory at the Richland Invitational under her belt, North Central's freshman phenom Katie Knight was taken to the limit by Shadle frosh Kendra Weitz over the difficult Audubon 3-mile course.  Battling like titans and nearly inseparable for two laps, Weitz was able to seize control in the third and take the race 18:04 to Knight's 18:15.  Meanwhile, the Shadle girls continue their recovery from a mid season bout with the flu and set aside fast times for focused control and remarkably place 5 runners in the top 7 with less than a second between runners 2-4.

Following the meet I had a chance to speak with Shadle coach Bob Isitt regarding the team and he assured me that they are recovering, are nearly fully well, and plan to run "all out" from districts through state.  For the last two weeks he has kept the girls very conservative in an effort to overcome the flu that has plagued much of the state this season.  Coach Isitt was quick to point out that this is the first race that Andrea Nelson has ever had another teammate finish ahead of her, but that Kendra was the only one fortunate enough to escape the flu this year (fingers crossed), so he had told her to go for it.  In the end, it turned out to be a spectator friendly duel that will certainly become the start of three years of intense competition between the two amazing freshman.
