4A Girls East Region Day 2: Upton 37-3.25 TJ, Lindseth 137-9 discus, Mead 3:58.24 4x400

Mead won the team competition with 89 points, 17 point over Southride with the help of big wins from Jazmine Redmon and Baylee Mires. Redmon won the long jump on Friday and came back Saturday to win the 400 in 59.64 and anchored the winning 4x200 team. Mires word of the day was “adjust” her race plan was to let the races unfold instead of taking charge right from the start. The adjustments started during the warm-up when the 1600 was delayed due to athletes in other events needing medical attention. When the race got started Mires hung back just off the leaders and waited until the last lap to take charge winning in 5:00.56. She employed the same strategy in her win the 800, pulling away in the final lap to run a 2:21.20. Mires joined Tymen Grant, and Payton Barcellos to get Redmon her fourth victory in the 4x400 with a state leading 3:58.24. Mead also got a win in the pole vault from sate leader Tasha Clark with a vault of 11-0. Being a fierce competitor she was upset with her miss at 11-6 even though she had won the event.  She moved to new poles the day of the meet because she was “too strong” for the ones she was used to using. She plans on getting practice this on the poles before going after the 13-0 mark at State.

LaQuilla Upton from Southridge finished second to Ferris’s Kelsey Lin in the 100 meters. Then to pair met up again in the triple jump. Upton popped off a 37-3.25 on her second jump in prelims. She had to ask the official to repeat the mark because she couldn’t believe the foot PR. She then sprinted over the fence to get congratulations from her coach. Her mark held up through finals.

Ferris’s Alexa Lindseth is getting closer to her goal with her victory in the discus of 137-9. The Ferris senior threw a five foot PR and is now the state leader just three inches over Regional rival from Eisenhower Jessica Bush. Bush finished second in the discus with a 135-4.
