North Central’s Ben Johnston took the early lead in the 3A 3200 meters and was followed closely by Seattle Prep’s Drew O’Donoghue-McDonald, and Mt. Spokane’s Allan Schroeder. The trio pulled away from the rest and continued to run in that order until the fifth lap when Schroeder swept around others to take the lead. Schroeder felt the pace was “too slow” and wanted to “get away” from the other two. The move “surprised” the other two, commenting that "Schroeder usually waits until the kick." Watching the race I realized that it was nearly identical to last fall’s Richland Invite where used Schroeder his kick to get the win over Johnston and McDonald. This race, however, had a different end…Johnston and McDonald matched Schroeder’s pace and passed him when the slowed. Johnston and McDonald raced stride for stride to the line where Johnston just edged his classmate with a time of 8:58.68 to 8:58.80. Schroder met his goal of sub 9:10 with a 9:06.8, which is a Mt. Spokane school record (previous record Cameron Schwehr 9:08.4 2000.)
In 3A boys’ pole vault Blake Bier from Prairie got the victory with his 14-6 vault over Shadle’s Tyler Wison also with a 14-6 vault. Sumner’s Kevin Johnson finished third with a vault of 14-0.
