Gardner heads home (by Craig Rice)
This meet in Portland featured runners from California, Texas and Alaska but Andrew Gardner of Mead and Ella Donaghu of Grant stole the show with course record victories, that the nation must recognize. Travis Neuman and Matthew Maton of Summit both ran times, which normally could be expected to win this met and others, while Sara Tsai and Erin Clark of Summit did the same in the girls’ race. The best thing, however, is that they were just the icing on the cake and there was plenty of quality action right behind them. For the girls Parkes Kendrick of Grant, Maggie Coleman of Hermiston & MaryKate McGuire had break out performances, while one must also be impressed by the challenging efforts of Alexis Fuller of Union and Kelly O’ Neill of Lakeridge. Kendrick’s time should put her on the national watch list: hint!
On the boys’ side Eduardo Juarez had a break-out performance, while Colby Gilbert of Skyview added another to his resume. Eric Alldritt of Summit & Alejandro Cisneros of Hermiston also put in first class effort, while Henry Jackson sophomore Aaron Roe showed once again that he is a runner to watch. Levi Thomet of Kodiak & Brooke Lizotte of Lathrop did a fine job in representing Alaska in spite of the fact that they had to extend their season two weeks beyond their state meet. As usual there was much to love about this race!
