PROSSER — This time, Isak Bergman saw more than Nectaly Barbosa\'s back.

And it came at the perfect moment in their friendly 800-meter showdown Thursday afternoon at Fiker Stadium.

Edging away over the
final
40 meters, the Ellensburg junior handed Barbosa his first high school loss in two years with a
career best and school record of
1 minute, 51.43 seconds in a Mid-Valley League dual meet.

Barbosa, the Prosser junior who captured Class 3A state titles in the 800 and 1,600 a year ago, clocked 1:52.22 — just off his season best of 1:50.98 and career best of 1:50.79.

Just as he did in his victory at the Pasco Invitational two weeks ago, Barbosa took command of the early pace and charged through a first lap of 52 with Bergman trailing between 53 and 54 seconds.

\"When I saw the 52 I thought that was a little fast,\" said Prosser coach Scott Yetter, \"but Nectaly was going for the time. Isak just ran a great race, and they were side-by-side down the stretch.\"

Bergman, who was second to Barbosa at Pasco, drew even with 70 meters to go, according to Yetter, and held form to the finish and the upset.

\"They\'re such good friends, and it\'s great they have each other to race against,\" Yetter added. \"If Nectaly was going to lose a race, I\'m sure it\'s a little easier on him that it was Isak.\"

Bergman and Barbosa will meet again on the same track next Friday in the Mid-Valley district meet. Both are considering a 400-800 double rather than an 800-1,600 double for the postseason.

Barbosa, who has been nursing a tender knee, dropped out after three laps of a 1,600 last Saturday in the Keith Jewett Invitational at Ellensburg. He leads the state in the 400 at 48.96 and Bergman is second at 49.1.
