Great Edinburgh Race

The BBC broadcast the race, which was held at 1 PM Scotland time (8 AM here) and included an interesting team to relate the action.  British greats Brendan Foster and Steve Cram acted as the commentators, while former European XC champion Paula Radcliffe plus Jonathan Edwards:   then again Americans get stuck with Carol Lewis.   The race was held at Holyrood Park, which has been described as picturesque, in Edinburgh.

Just cursory results are available but Emilia Gorecka of Great Britain, who defeated Aisling Cuffe here last year, defended her title in the Junior Women’s 4K with a time 13:46.  Gorecka and Jessica Judd, also from Great Britain, pulled away early and waged their own private duel, before Gorecka raced away to victory.   Judd followed in second with 13:58 while Rebecca Weston closed well to take third in 14:01.   Britain dominated the race by taking the top six positions but Emily Stites, a freshman at William & Mary, garnered sixth to lead the US.

Jonathan Davies gave the home fans a brief thrill by taking the lead in the Junior men’s race but a trio of runners charged late and stole the final show.    Dino Bosnjak of Croatia led the European all-star team to victory with his first place clocking of 19:01 for 6K.   Isaac Kimeli, running for Belgium, followed a second later and Craig Novak of the US was third in 19:03.  Davies came in fourth with 19:07.   Estevan De La Rosa was the second American with his mark of 19:10, which was good for sixth.  Ryan Roush of Malone College added a ninth place finish for the second place US men, who finished thirteen points behind Europe’s total of sixteen.

The Senior American men won their race over an 8K course, as Bobby Mack, who placed second in the event last year, won with a time of 24:27.   Jake Riley, formerly of Sehome High School, placed seventh in 24:50 and Craig Forys was right behind in eighth & credited with the same time.

It has been a day since the race was completed and USATF still has posted nothing but the following additions have been added.    Jacob Thomson, who led at the 3K,  placed twelfth in the junior men’s race with a time of 19:37.  Sophie Chase finished fourteenth in the junior women’s race with 14:42, while Anna Holdiman followed with a fifteenth place effort with a time of 14:52.

Finally the USATF posted results on Monday so Tony Smoragiewicz (11th - 19:36) & Jake Leingang (15th -  20:00) can be added to the Junior Men.   Molly Seidel (12th - 14:35), Caroline Kellner (16th - 15:08) and Taylor Manett (17th - 15:13) complete the Junior Women’s list.
