Northwest Review – Week Ending May 5

Should anyone question the quality of last Friday’s Jesuit Relays they only need to look at the Milesplit national rankings for the girls’ 1500, which is dominated by participants in that event.  Alexa Efraimson of Camas, Paige Rice of St. Mary’s Academy and Amy-Eloise Neale of Glacier were the top three in a brilliant field, which included Idaho’s Emily Nist.  We were on hand to cover Jesuit as well as the Centralia Freshman race and included the links for your perusal but there were a number of other events on the schedule.

The Dean Nice Invitational held in Gresham had the advantage of Haley Crouser ’s participation, which adds to any invite’s importance.  Crouser threw the Javelin 164-01 in less than ideal conditions and, although it was not up to her national standard, is still one of the top marks this season.  Haley also won the Shot Put with a fine 42-06 and topped the field in the 100 Hurdles with 15.32.  She also placed second in the High Jump with 5-04 just behind the winning height of 5-05 of Sydney Eaton of Wilsonville.   Milwaukie’s Shannon Susbauer won the 1500 Meter run in 4:45, as Emily Weber (4:46) of South Salem  & Brigid Behrens (4:48) of Corvallis earned 2nd & 3rd respectively.    Behrens scored in the 800M with 2:17.15 defeating her team mate Gwyneth McMorris, who ran 2:20.  Taryn Rawlings of Wilsonville led the way in the girls’ 3K in 10:48.  Malika Waschmann of Corvallis was a double winner with victories in the 400 Meters (58.85) and the 300 Hurdles (45.64), while Ify Onyima of Gresham scored again in the 100 Dash with 12.62.  Olivia Campbell vaulted 11-09 to triumph there.

Daniel Fauss of South Salem soared 14-00 to take the Pole Vault and Ty James of Wilsonville scored in the 3K with 8:58.  Austin Baird of Marist edged Mitch Modin of Mountain View (Or) in the Long Jump 22-09 to 22-04.   The short hurdles went to Colman Byrum of Marist in 15.52, while Andrew Laschober of Wilsonville took the longer event with 39.68.  In the 1500M for guys Akiahru Kitigawa of Wilsonville ran 4:06 to best Alejandro Cisneros of Hermiston, who ran 4:15.

Tera Novy of Montesano is like Haley Crouser in that her presence can single-handedly increase a meet’s importance and her Shot Put of 45-03.50 at the Southwest Washington Classic was one of the best marks in the nation.  She also won the Discus with 150-05.  Evan Ernest of R A Long won the guys’ Shot Put with 49-04 and his team mate Mitch Moe claimed the Discus with 148-07.  Jake Clizbe of Kalama secured titles in both the Long Jump (22-03) and the Triple Jump (41-00).

The Oregon Twilight featured collegiate athletes for the most part but Hannah Cunliffe of the Seattle Speed made her presence felt in the 100 meters by earning second in 11.98.  Hannah also earned third in the 200M, again against collegians, with 24.86.   Mimi Bain of the Speed ran 12.59 in the 100M & 27.02 in the 200M, while Sarah Stavig placed 7th in the 100M for the Seattle Speed in 12.43.

The Cotton Invite at Grant High in Portland produced some fine marks in the Field including Emmi Collier’s heave of 43-08 in the Shot Put.  The Warrenton athlete also placed second in the Discus behind Sydney Johnson of Hillsboro, who threw 123-08.  Michelle Ellis of Hillsboro earned first over Liberty’s Elizabeth Pecsok in the High Jump based on fewer misses with both clearing 5-02.   Christina Mulch of Grant won the 800 Meter Run in 2:20.

Genna Settle had a fine day at the Stayton Invitational with three victories.  She scored in the Long Jump with 17-00.75 and doubled on the track with wins in the 100M (12.82) and the 200M (25.96).  Cherilyn Bunker of Newport led the way in the Shot Put with 42-05, while Kacie Hargett, also from Newport, scored in both the Javelin and the Discus (110-03).  Gavin Flynn of Taft ran 50.66 to take the 400 Meters and also won the 200M with 23.21.

The Boise City Championship provided Jade Childs of Capital another chance to shine, as she won the hurdles in 14.61.  She also placed second in the Long Jump with 18-04 behind the effort of 18-08.50 of Brittany Owens.   Borah’s Owens also won the Triple jump with 39-00.   Bishop Kelly runner Briana Tiffany won the 400M in 59.71 and Louisa Serfe of Timberline took advantage of Emily Nist ’s foray into Oregon with a victory in the 1600M in 5:11.  Also of note was Megan Suitts’ triumph for Borah in the Discus with 124-03.   Bishop Kelly runner Ian Middleton scored in the 400M with a fine 49.56, yet had less than a second margin over Nathan Stark of Capital, who ran 50.46.  Tyler Higby of Borah triumphed in both the 100M (11.36) & the 200M (22.23) while Peter Maguire of Boise swept both of the hurdles events with 14.55 & 38.83.   Timberline’s Sam Nelson is making a habit of topping 14-00 in the Pole Vault & in the city championship he cleared a PR of 14-03.    Neal Murphy of BK took the Shot Put in 49-06 and Konnor Moden, also from Bishop Kelly, won the Discus with 134-00.   The two-lapper went to David Steele of Capital 1:58.
