Saturday’s Bellarmine Invitational not only marked the start of the high school cross country season, it also provided a preview of just how competitive the battle for a 2007 state title in girls Class 4A could be.

Shadle Park sophomore Andrea Nelson held off Bellarmine Prep senior Nicole Cochran in the final 20 yards of the girls varsity race to take first place with a time of 11 minutes, 18.76 seconds.

Cochran (11:19.33) was followed by teammate Kayla Evans, who finished in 11:20.47
