WA Runners try hand at USTAF XC Nationals Scott Bush Feb 12, 2008

While the high school cross country season ended months ago, many of the top harriers in the country meet in San Diego this weekend at USATF XC Nationals. Participants will try to qualify for the IAAF World Cross Country Championships, which take place in Edinburgh, Scotland on March 30.

Several Washington State Athletes will take at shot at moving on to Edinburgh.

\"\"Jordan Hasay (CA) (pictured left) ran 9:23.90 for 3000m this past weekend at Cuesta College, in a combined race that featured both male and female competitors and was held outdoors.  Hasay finished sixth overall in the race and ran a personal best in the event.  Her time ranks her #15 on the all-time performers list, and is the best time run in the event since 2004.  This was Hasay's first track race this season.  Article

Remember Daniel Huling? Scott Bush Feb 04, 2008

Remember back in the day when Daniel Huling was tearing up the cross country courses and tracks of Illinois?  I sure do.  Huling was a multi-all-State performer from Geneva H.S., finishing eleventh at state in cross country his senior year, then backing that up with a second place finish in the 1600m at state in track.  Huling went on to become very successful in the steeplechase at Miami University (OH), and now trains in Columbus, Ohio and is attempting to make the Olympic team in the steeple.  He finished third in the event at the 2006 USATF Outdoor T&F Championships, and he has a blog now where he details his training and racing.  Lets keep supporting our states best!

The 101st Millrose Games will air on TV twice this weekend.  The first airing will be live Friday night from 7-8 p.m. (Eastern Time) on ESPN2.  On Saturday the Millrose Games are scheduled to be shown from 2:30-3:30 (Eastern Time) on NBC.  Reports have indicated that Friday's airing will show the girls high school mile in its entirety, while Saturday may or may not show the boys high school mile.  Both fields are stacked with talent, so make sure to support our sport by watching the broadcasts.

Only a freshman, Nick Vena (NJ) kicked off his high school career with a bang, breaking the freshman indoor national record in the shot put with his huge throw of 61-01.5 in early January.  MileSplit National Editor Scott Bush took some time to talk with Nick, covering his new record, his goals, his training and much more.

Speed in MD: Zahorodny Runs U.S. #1 at 500m Scott Bush Jan 23, 2008

Tuesday night in Maryland at the Montgomery County Championships, Wil Zahorodny ran a new U.S. #1 time in the 500m dash.  Zahorodny blazed to 1:05.09, besting this year's prior U.S. #1 of 1:05.80 by Kendall Gregory (OH).  Zahorodny beat a great field of competitiors, beating second place Antonio Palmer (MD) by over a second.  Palmer's runner-up finish of 1:06.30 is also a U.S. top ten mark.

Fields Set at the Reebok Boston Indoor Games Scott Bush Jan 23, 2008

Many of the top distance runners in the U.S. take to the track at the Reggie Lewis Center at the Reebok Boston Indoor Games this Saturday.  The final elite boys and girls mile fields have been announced and the meet's website has posted up some fun features on the high school races.  It should be quite a weekend in Boston!
