There is something that is utterly fascinating about watching top distance runners. A runner like Haile Gebrselassie, who last month set the world marathon record with a time of 2 hours, four minutes and 26 seconds, comes to mind. He makes running look so easy.
Wednesday at Fort Steilacoom Park in alternating rain and sunshine during the 3.1-mile Narrows League Cross Country Championships, the one making it look easy was Gig Harbor senior Miles Unterreiner. It was not unexpected. Unterreiner is one of the best high-school distance runners in the state, and when he runs cross country he normally takes the lead and disappears, running all alone except for his thoughts.
